Story
Maurice, a streetwise tomcat, has the perfect money-making scam. Everyone knows the stories about rats and pipers, and Maurice has a stupid-looking kid with a pipe, and his very own plague of rats—strangely educated rats. But in Bad Blintz, the little con suddenly goes down the drain. For someone there is playing a different tune and now the rats must learn a new word. EVIL. It's not a game any more. It's a rat-eat-rat world. And that might only be the start.

Enjoyable... with some personal challenges
Reviewed: 16-02-23
I loved this book when I read it a few years ago, and did enjoy listening to it, but I had some difficulties with the narration. Nothing major, just that the narrator has a deep voice and is limited on voice acting, so sometimes I got confused about "who" was supposed to be doing the talking. Also, there we aspects of the story that I didn't enjoy as much when read out loud. Likely because when I fear to myself I can "self edit" to enjoy the story more, but when someone else is reading it to you you're stuck with their interpretation...and in this case I found it occasional jarring.

Story
It's the night before Hogswatch. And it's too quiet. It's the night before Hogswatch. There's snow, there are robins, there are trees covered with decorations, but there's a notable lack of the big fat man who delivers the toys. He's gone. Susan the governess has got to find him before morning; otherwise, the sun won't rise. And unfortunately, her only helpers are a raven with an eyeball fixation, the Death of Rats, and an "oh god of hangovers".

If I wasn't already very familiar with the story I feel this would have been a confusing performance. Still, it was a quick, easy listen and - because I've read it many times - I enjoyed it.

Story
Everybody knows there's no such thing as a female wizard. So when the wizard Drum Billet accidentally passes on his staff of power to an eighth daughter of an eighth son, a girl called Eskarina (Esk, for short), the misogynistic world of wizardry wants nothing to do with her.

I've always enjoyed Equal Rites; one of Terry Pratchett's best books. This particular telling of it was excellent!

Good story poor narration
Reviewed: 15-06-22
The story was quite good and I enjoyed it. Though the narration was...off-putting. I found the attempt at voices quite grating and they generally detracted from my experience of the story. Some basic mispronunciations confused the story in places, and the emperor having an American accent was jarring. But the story itself was strong, which is why I persisted to the end.
