Story
When Alex Easton, a retired soldier, receives word that their childhood friend Madeline Usher is dying, they race to the ancestral home of the Ushers in the remote countryside of Ruritania. What they find there is a nightmare of fungal growths and possessed wildlife, surrounding a dark, pulsing lake. Madeline sleepwalks and speaks in strange voices at night, and her brother Roderick is consumed with a mysterious malady of the nerves. Aided by a redoubtable British mycologist and a baffled American doctor, Alex must unravel the secret of the House of Usher before it consumes them

Short and spooky
Reviewed: 17-01-25
Great short-ish story to listen to especially on gloomy January days. I haven't actually read The Fall of The House of Usher so can't compare and contrast, but I enjoyed this listen in its own right.
The narrator has a great voice and his Scottish accent seemed pretty good... however the voice of Mrs Potter CHANGED! She was a country lady to begin with (though not entirely sure what accent it was supposed to be) then towards the end she turned into a posh lady with Queens English pronunciation. This spoiled it for me tbh!

Story
Much like Lin-Manuel Miranda did in Hamilton, the New York Times best-selling author David Elliott turns a classic on its head in form and approach, updating the timeless story of Theseus and the Minotaur for a new generation. A rough, rowdy, and darkly comedic young adult retelling in verse, Bull will have listeners reevaluating one of mythology's most infamous monsters.

This is a modern retelling of the story of the Minotaur. Kind of a rap/story/poem with, I thought, a bit of a Midsummer Nights Dream vibe.. but with some swear words. The narrators were brill. One main issue... it was too short!

Story
Traumatized by the bombing of Dresden at the time he had been imprisoned, Pilgrim drifts through all events and history, sometimes deeply implicated, sometimes a witness. He is surrounded by Vonnegut's usual large cast of continuing characters (notably here the hack science fiction writer Kilgore Trout and the alien Tralfamadorians, who oversee his life and remind him constantly that there is no causation, no order, no motive to existence).

I know, I know. Many people use the same title for their reviews but it really sums it all up. An amazing piece of poignant literature that would be great for a book club as there are so many ways to view and interpret what Billy Pilgrim says and does. Now off to read about other people's thoughts on this matter..
oh and James Franco is so talented and generally divine.

Story
Alaska, 1974. Untamed. Unpredictable. A story of a family in crisis struggling to survive at the edge of the world, it is also a story of young and enduring love. Cora Allbright and her husband, Ernt, a recently returned Vietnam veteran scarred by the war, uproot their 13-year-old daughter, Leni, to start a new life in Alaska. Utterly unprepared for the weather and the isolation, but welcomed by the close-knit community, they fight to build a home in this harsh, beautiful wilderness.

I have not cried at a book for a VERY LONG TIME but this got me good and proper!
There are a lot of triggers in this book for domestic violence, trauma, hospitalisation, and loss, however this adds to the emotional roller coaster of a ride based in the unforgiving landscape of Alaska.

A quick listen from AudiblePlus. Got to really like the narrators voice pretty quickly, though he could have made it a lot more dramatic with a change of pace.
I liked the main characters but the others were a bit... meh. Story has potential and wished it had gone a bit deeper. Flat ending.

Amazing characters- I just want to hug them!
I'm not a crier, but this book definitely pulls at my heart strings. Kristin Hannah really takes you on a journey into the Dust Bowl with Elsa and her family. Struggle upon struggle upon conflict but love remains.
Heartbreaking and indeed heartwarming.
Julia Whelan does an amazing job and after listening to the interview at the end, I have a lot of respect for the narrators craft- particularly Whelan.

What's all the hype about Booktok?
Oh. I seeee.
Fast paced, exciting story with dragons, bloodshed, creatures, family and friend relationships and love with some naughtiness.
Rebecca Yarros has certainly not wasted any words in the whole of this book and even though it appears to be a chunky listen, it zoomed by and the hours disappeared. Great job by the narrator- drama all the way!
Please tell me this is going to be a film right?!
Lovers of The Hunger Games, ACOTAR and Game of Thrones will love this.

What a wonderful idea for a book.
Magical Realism. Addie cannot be remembered. The book follows her life through the troubles and benefits of her curse both in practical ways and in emotional ones.
A beautifully written story, but a third too long.

It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide.
