Story
Major Ernest Pettigrew (Ret’d) is not interested in the frivolity of the modern world. Since his wife Nancy’s death, he has tried to avoid the constant bother of nosy village women; his grasping, ambitious son; and the ever-spreading suburbanisation of the English countryside, preferring to lead a quiet life upholding the values that people have lived by for generations. But when his brother’s death sparks an unexpected friendship with Mrs Ali, the widowed village shopkeeper of Pakistani descent, the Major is drawn out of his regimented world.

Spoilt by unnecessary gaps
Reviewed: 29-10-23
A lovely story, beautifully read but unfortunately spoilt by long & seemingly unnecessary pauses/gaps leaving one thinking or at least not knowing if parts of the story had been omitted

Story
'Jesus Christ. I found one.' These words are blurted over the phone to Constable Snowy Lane, who is preoccupied with no more than a ham sandwich and getting a game with the East Fremantle league side on Saturday. They signal the beginning of a series of events that are to shake Perth to its foundations. It is 1979, and Perth is jumping with pub bands and overnight millionaires. 'Mr Gruesome' has just taken another victim. Snowy's life and career are to be forever changed by the grim deeds of a serial killer and the dark bloom spreading across the City of Light.

A quagmire of similes

A good story well read - could have benefitted from better editing, the similes were coming a mile a minute and at times ruined my enjoyment

Enjoyable from start to finish

Even though I felt that how the couple had died was apparent from very early on in the story I enjoyed hearing the steps each character had taken before they died. No real shocks/ surprises but well written and nicely plotted

Story
The murderee is Nicola Six, a 'black hole' of sex and self-loathing who is intend on orchestrating her own extinction. The murderer may be Keith Talent, a violent lowlife whose only passions are pornography and darts; or the rich, honourable, and dimly romantic Guy Clinch. And as Nicola leads her suitors towards the precipice, London - and, indeed, the whole world - seems to shamble after them in a corrosively funny novel of complexity and morality.

Story
Louise North doesn't care what the neighbors think. She lets her lover leave his car just outside her house in broad daylight, telling everyone he is a central heating salesman. Still, it's a shock when she's found shot dead, covered by the equally dead body of the "salesman." It was his third visit to the gloomy house on Orchard Drive. Each time, he parked in the same place. Each time, he carried a briefcase. And each time, Louise North greeted him at the door.

Felt too much like JKR trying to get her own back on internet trolls with all the boring incomprehensible chat room stuff which went a long way to spoiling an excellent plot line. I glad I stuck with it but it is supposed to be a novel not a poorly veiled vindication of the author
