A bit disappointed
Reviewed: 28-11-24
I have read all previous books, but felt I was getting rather tired of the self-pitying whinginess displayed by lady Georgiana… the story lacked energy, even the love story element between lady G and her hubby felt a bit ‘soso’…
I began to ‘like’ the sister-in-law who presented with her usual forcefulness, the King’s abdication was handled far too softly… the whole ‘tone’ of the story lacked conviction and energy. I’m a bit disappointed, was looking forward to hearing the book. Maybe my expectations were too high?

Story
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

So lovely to revisit what I once read for my English literature course at Uni … amazing what a few decades of living has done to my understanding! Thank you for a lively and nostalgic journey to ‘way back when’ … this encourages me to revisit other old favourites next!

The narration is truly killing the series, I’ve already bought the next chapter/ book, but now almost wish I hadn’t. It’s an almost ‘dead’ inflection, no intonation, no ‘music’ to the reading. I’m sadly disappointed, the series might otherwise be really good.. what a pity!

Told with great insight

This moved me immeasurably, well told, each character had their own ‚voice‘ and was beautifully created. Wish every story of ‘difference’ and discrimination ended this well.
Still, a lovely insight into life in the 21st century… and nearly every social issue got a mention.
Thank you.

Did not grab my attention, sadly

Two reasons for not continuing with this series: too drawn out, lacked atmosphere, not enough tension, either detective or personal, and the strident voice of narrator, kept having to reduce volume. Almost didn’t finish it…
