I wanted to like this.

The story sounds like it was made for the sakes of making it. A lot of nice ideas but to be honest it was convoluted-too much too fast. I couldn’t keep track and eventually, although I listened to the end, I just glazed over and felt cut off and immeasurably bored. I literally can’t wait for my next book. Any book. Perhaps if the names were familiar I could put faces to them and actually remember who the heck he was talking about. But the action… oh please why wasn’t there time between one life critical moment and the next. It never settled down and just became unbelievable. Might be right up your street, just not for me.

Story
Late Victorian London. When James Miller, the most respectable of Scottish businessmen, is pulled, dead, from the Thames, his daughter is drawn into an investigation which reveals a whole world of secrets and corruption. Alongside local detective Culley, Catriona’s search for her father’s killer leads all the way to the tragic truth behind the ghostly legend of The Darkwater Bride and the power of her deadly kiss. The Darkwater Bride combines the genres of the Victorian mystery thriller with the equally classic Victorian mode of the ghostly tale.

I preferred the pace of revelation of wonderment and awe better in the first book but this one packs a huge amount of crazy good stuff in its second half. Can’t wait for book 3.

A good enough story but just getting a little familiar and unmoving. I enjoy the series and look forward to the next episode. I just want to see the 'Child of Destiny' actually do something exciting for once.

This is not your usual pace but neither is it boring or predictable. I honestly don't know how the story was written without first hand experience. Very enjoyable, give it the time it deserves. But see if you listen to this on a cold dark journey into work, some of your hair just may turn a little greyer when get that creepy tingle :)

This was no doubt about it, a really good book. But it is way too long and frequently boring as hell. Trying to piece together parts from one end of the story to another can be like playing sodoku by memory. But seen as a series of smaller events that are all in their own right very good, which work together to create one whole tapestry, yes, it works and it works well. But by heck its a lot of work.
When a chap in the story observes a spiders web and sees how the spider can react to different things, not because of the movement but because of the lack of certain movement, you should by that point know whether the book is for you or not. I loved this concept and all the concepts that tied in with it - and then their real world application and how they created a series of events that eventually became what they do.
However, these concepts draw together like a diagram of the final fastest and shortest era on Earth (according to the Aztecs) as this era is cast off, but then never takes us anywhere. There is no realisation to this story. Its just launch pad of concepts. Unlike many a book though, I wouldn't take back the time I spent on it (and its a lot!) because it has helped with mature and put form to many of my own ideas.

Story
In Newcastle-upon-Tyne, AD 2142, Detective Sidney Hurst attends a brutal murder scene. The victim is one of the wealthy North family clones – but none have been reported missing. And the crime’s most disturbing aspect is how the victim was killed. Twenty years ago, a North clone billionaire and his household were horrifically murdered in exactly the same manner, on the tropical planet of St Libra.

A solid fare
Reviewed: 12-12-13
The story is pretty good. Certainly loads of characters and politcs to get into and a solid realisation of one possible future. I felt sometimes that Hamilton wanted to keep us guessing by writing something surprising that would sort itself out when eventually worked out how he was going to do it. Its nice enough but too often left this overly drawn out story coasting along. I was glad for having read it but will be cautious about reading more like this as there are quite a few books out there which are just a lot more gripping. The story was read competently but didn't blow me away.
