Story
Welcome to the Centennial. Every 100 years, the island of Lightlark appears to host the Centennial, a deadly game that only the rulers of six realms are invited to play. The invitation is a summons—a call to embrace victory and ruin, baubles and blood. The Centennial offers the six rulers one final chance to break the curses that have plagued their realms for centuries. Each ruler has something to hide. Each realm's curse is uniquely wicked. To destroy the curses, one ruler must die.

OK for a free book
Reviewed: 03-12-24
It's ok for a free read, but if I'd paid money for it I'd have been badly dissapointed. The narrator was good and brought more life to the story, the plot was predictable though, and I wasn't invested in the characters at all, I found myself not caring which of the men she ended up with in the end, as they both may as well have been cardboard cutouts for all the personality they had.
It grated on me that the narrator didn't know how to pronounce Isla, and if she reads this... it's "eye-la".
It was a decent story though and I did listen to the end, which was full of action. I think it would have been a lot more enjoyable with better character building and some emotive descriptions.
Conclusion: Give it a go, you might like it.

Story
My little girl’s room is dark. Her bed is empty. I turn on her unicorn nightlight and bury my face in her pillow, my heart breaking. I know who did this. His name is Samuel Barlow. He has pale sallow skin and red-rimmed icy-blue eyes. But no one will listen. As darkness falls and rain lashes against the window, there’s a knock at my door and I open it to see those same eyes staring back at me. It’s his mother and she says she can help me find my daughter.

A gripping story
Reviewed: 03-07-24
I loved this. This sort of thing isn't usually the sort of book I read, but I thought "hey it's free why not". Once I had started it however, it totally gripped me. I was late to bed, and the following day got up early to listen. I finished it all in less than 24 hours, and the ending was a real twist. As others have said, there are clues all through the story as to what the ending might be, but unless you actually know it, it wasn't obvious and I really didn't guess.
The last chapters twisted and changed your expectations so much, it could make you dizzy trying to follow it, so I didn't want to stop listening. I even went back a few times just to make sure that what I heard, WAS what I heard.
Highly recommended.

Great story
Reviewed: 29-02-24
It's hard to find a really original story, and this is pretty close to it. Some of the elements were a little predictable, but on the whole it's not copying anything. I'm not sure if it was because I listen while working, but some of the events were a little confusing, however it may be better on 2nd listening.
The narrator was the thing that irked me. She is pretty good, however some of the voices she did didn't make sense, I can tell she was trying to make different voices for each character, but the accents were a little odd and certain characters sounded like they were old even though it was supposed to be difficulty talking (from what I understand anyway).
If I knew what I knew now, I'd definitely buy it again, and I will listen again to see if I can concentrate more 2nd time through.

I am enjoying the series although it's long winded
Reviewed: 27-12-23
I am enjoying this series so far, I have only 2 things that I am not overly happy about.
One is the long winded bits where skipping over details would have made it a bit better, although I know I do get bored easily.
The other is that although the narrator is great at voices, she often makes the heroine sound like she's on the verge of tears when she is saying normal things, it makes her sound weak, whiney and unlikeable, whereas, with a different way of reading the words, the heroine could have sounded more like her character which is determined and stubborn.
Saying that I will carry on as it's a good story.

Mary Sue and Mr Perfect but otherwise enjoyable
Reviewed: 08-12-23
I had to say, I really enjoyed the story, apart from the author going into way too much detail with the small actions where a vague description would have done, and in fact, less detail would have got the story moving better and given more sense of the issues going on. The Heroine is a Mary-Sue and the Hero a Mr Perfect, but for a 3 in 1 book and only 1 credit for the lot, it was worth the listen. Books 1 and 2 moved better, and most of the issues were in book 3, but by then I cared about the characters and wanted to know what happened.

Story
Rosa Larkin is down on her luck in London, so when she inherits a near-derelict corner shop in a quaint Devon village, her first thought is to sell it for cash and sort out her life. But nothing is straightforward about this legacy. While the identity of her benefactor remains a mystery, he - or she - has left one important legal proviso: that the shop cannot be sold, only passed on to somebody who really deserves it. Rosa makes up her mind to give it a go: to put everything she has into getting the shop up and running again in the small seaside community of Cockleberry Bay. But can she do it all on her own?

Great story, terrible narrator
Reviewed: 26-11-23
The narrator's voice was wrong for this book in my opinion.
She made the characters sound creepy, her intonations didn't make sense and she only seemed to have one emotion.
Some of the place names were pronounced wrong, and the main character, in my opinion, had an accent which was too strong.
She wasn't monotonous, but somehow she seemed to make every conversation sound like it was amused questioning, amusingly suggestive or just plain amused.
She may have been better with a different book, but I didn't think it worked with this one.

I was looking for something different and decided to take a chance on this book. The first chapter made me want to turn it off, but I stuck with it and I am happy I did.
It's disturbing, but addictive. The people are not caricatures, they are realistic characters, the villain is ingenious and the narrators are excellent.
I may look for other stuff by these narrators and by Adam Cesare.

Story
Football has come to the ancient city of Ankh-Morpork - not the old fashioned, grubby pushing and shoving but the new, fast football with pointy hats for goalposts and balls that go gloing when you drop them. And now, the wizards of Unseen University must win a football match, without using magic, so they're in the mood for trying everything else. The prospect of the Big Match draws in a street urchin with a wonderful talent for kicking a tin can, a maker of jolly good pies, a dim but beautiful young woman who might just turn out to be the greatest fashion model there has ever been, and the mysterious Mr Nutt.

It's a decent story for someone who isn't a Pratchett fan, but if you are, then it's a remake, but not even on Discworld, it's in England, which really defies the point.
Die hard Pratchett fans, this is only going to get you frustrated and annoyed at the writer, if you just want a story about a different type of football, and don't love Pratchett, then go for it, it's actually entertaining in it's own right. I just wish they had called it something else, e.g. "Unseen Academicals - rewritten".

Great story but the narrators nearly ruined it
Reviewed: 07-10-23
The narrators on the previous books are great, but the female narrator sounded like she was thinking of something else, or was bored throughout, her voice just didn't work with this book.
The make narrator was better, but again, he didn't sound like he enjoyed reading it, and the accents were just wrong, plus there was occasions where he gave the wrong inflection to sentences, as if, again, he wasn't really paying attention to what he was reading.
Please keep the same narrator throughout next time you make a series!
