Story
Ever since Edgar Allan Poe looted a family's ignoble secret history for his classic story "The Fall of the House of Usher", living in the shadow of that sick dynasty has been an inescapable scourge for generations of Usher descendants. But not for horror novelist Rix Usher. Years ago he fled the isolated family estate of Usherland in the menacing North Carolina hills to pursue his writing career. He promised never to return. But his father's impending death has brought Rix back home to assume the role of Usher patriarch - and face his worst fears.

Shouting!
Reviewed: 14-07-24
The story isn't too bad, but the narration is awful. He shouts half the time. Occasionally it's because a character is shouting, but more often it's not due to that and there seems to be no reason. After a few chapters this becomes very irritating.

Story
Sally Diamond cannot understand why what she did was so strange. She was only doing what her father told her to do, to put him out with the rubbish when he died. Now Sally is the centre of attention, not only from the hungry media and worried police, but also a sinister voice from a past she has no memory of. As she begins to discover the horrors of her childhood, recluse Sally steps into the world for the first time, making new friends, finding independence, and learning that people don't always mean what they say.

An extraordinarily ordinary family
Reviewed: 31-08-23
If you can't find something to love in this book, then it's worrying because it has it all Rock n roll, sex, life and death, and people's ways of dealing with it all.
I loved that it was written in the first person for every character, hearing them tell something from their perspective and the same event from someone else hilights how badly wrong we can go without communication.
When something is billed as "you'll laugh and cry..." I rarely find it's true.. this book.. I laughed whilst I was crying.
it is beautifully written and honest, and although the whole family is flawed, you can't help love them because the flaws are so real, and you recognise them in your own family.
I don't know what I can say to make you want to read this, but please do, it's the best book I've read in years. it's well worth your time, and I'd have paid 2 credits for this one and still think I got a great deal

Story
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

I loved this as much as I have loved any of his books, and Will Wheaton was made to narrate them. The pairing is superb. As JS says, this is a pop song, but it's a really good one. The kind that keeps playing in your head after you turn off the radio.

The characters were 2 dimensional and Pippa is not at all likeable. You cannot see what she sees in Steve because, apart from loving her, there's nothing to him.
The story is predictable, from the start you know the ending. I kept going with it as I thought there must be some surprise, it couldn't be that obvious. Sadly, it was.

I'm not a gamer and am also older, but I loved this. Others have said they found it boring because they weren't gamers and didn't understand the terminology, but I didn't find that to be the case. There were things I didn't understand but I focused on the story rather than the technical details, treating it like a normal fantasy novel and thoroughly enjoyed it. Of course, you can't go far wrong with Wil Wheaton narrating.
