Story
The first rule of nuclear war is that there are no rules. Up to now, no one outside of official circles has known exactly what would happen if a rogue state launched a nuclear missile at the Pentagon. Second by second and minute by minute, these are the real-life protocols that choreograph the end of civilisation as we know it. Because the plans for General Nuclear War are among the most classified secrets held by the United States government, this book takes the listener up to the razor’s edge of what can legally be known.

It's truly eye opening, we hear so much about deterrence, we praise the engineering behind it, the likes of Cheyenne mountain... yet the truth is, it's all a lie, and we shouldn't find comfort in it... in fact, everybody should be made deeply uncomfortable
This is the world we will leave to our children... and all I can say is, I'm sorry.

Story
Once a united Legion, the disparate splinters of the Emperor’s Children now eke out a violent, hedonistic existence between the stars, raiding and ravaging worlds to indulge their fathomless appetites. Xantine, proud leader of the Adored and a true son of Fulgrim, wants more than simply pillaging backwater worlds. He soon finds what he has been searching for – Serrine, a wealthy but cruel planet festering under misrule and inequality, cut off from the Imperium by warp storms. It is too tantalising a prize to ignore, and Xantine sets out to bring perfection to his new world.

But it's just a fairly generic space marine story, and the main protagonist whips out his super super-power, or super-witch when sh*te is going south.
None of the characters are very memorable, and it doesn't give you much feeling of "menace" from the Chaos Marine side, they stumble from problem to problem, and they like killing each other... which doesn't do much for their image or make them appear as an apocalyptic menace to the empire.
I initially had similar problem with Ragnar book 2, where i hated the language (talking of Magic), but actually I went back to it a few weeks later, looked past the annoyances, and I enjoyed it..
so this is my muddled review.. give it a try, but don't expect an epic tale of Chaos, and you'll enjoy it.

Not a lot to say.. book 1 was the start of something epic, the feeling you get when you see the intro to something incredible (thinking Mass Effect)..
Then book 2 comes along, and drops you out of orbit.. to a slow and monotonous death.
Maybe this is a bit harsh, the authors Gotrek books are excellent, but BL dropped the ball here, Throwing a relative-newcomer to 40k into such a high profile book. The writing style is completely inconsistent, and plot is more akin to fan-fiction - which is a shame, as it was so promising.
Buy it just so you can at least be prepared for book 3.. or don't..

Terra is besieged. The outcome of the war lies on a knife edge. The Warmaster Horus’ bloody seven-year crusade has led to this – the cradle of humanity, where he is to kill his father, the Emperor. With the war at this critical juncture, Sanguinius, primarch of the loyalist Blood Angels, braves the horrors of the Warmaster’s flagship, The Vengeful Spirit, with a single purpose in mind – to slay his brother Horus, decapitate the Heresy once and for all, and stop the forces of Chaos from taking Terra.

I'm listening to the script for a loonytoon's episode,.. so far it consists 97% of characters leaving through one door, then immediately re-entering the same room via another door...
Every character has a scenario like this,.. minimal development of the major arcs...
did I mention, I'm 9 hours in? by this point, it is loonyroons mixed with Groundhog day - This explains how BlackLibrary suddenly managed to find enough text for a 3rd book!

I've never been able to stick with the Millitarum books.. thankfully this is so much more.
but I will agree with the other reviewers, the Narator is great at narration, but his voices for the different charactors, such as Abbadon simply don't fit - this really needed Jonathan Keeble, since he's the man for the Black Legion books, it would have provided perfect consistency,

With the stage set in books 1-3... this could have been epic.
Unfortunately, as with thr ladt book, all we get here is a generic story, and aside from 1 or 2 common characters, this has no continuity from previous books, and does nothing to move the story of along.
The performance was good, but the story sucks, and I feel like I was conned.. I'm about ready to Abadon this series!

Well narrated and It's a good story, but it really has no consequence from what I tell.. the end is just vague and frustrating - though I guess this is the intent behind Cypher.

Awesome book, fantastically narrated, and very cleverly edited.. Even leaving some funny comments, like getting lost on what chapter he's moving onto, just adds to the clumsiness of the Orcs!
I honestly can't imagine anybody else narrating these.
