This is fast-paced and engaging from the outset. The narrators are excellent and I couldn't stop listening. Even though many of the characters are unsavoury, I still wanted to know the outcome.

Wonderfully well read as you'd expect from Jodie Comer with accents subtly used to reflect her emotions. Story is realistic and frightening, sad indictment of what many victims go through during and after an event like this.

This is my first book by this author and will not be my last after listening to this story. I feared it may be dull and hard to digest but the blend of historic detail with a great plot was thoroughly entertaining and I finished it wishing desperately that a follow-up would be already available. The narration was just what was needed for this story and whilst I would not say that the 15 hours+ flew by, I never stopped wanting to know how the story would end.

Story
Only nine criminals in the UK have been granted lifelong anonymity. Their crimes so heinous that their identities are permanently changed for their own safety. Upon release, they're given a second chance: new identities and new homes with new neighbours who have no idea. Because, by law, they cannot be named as who they are - or were... But what if someone started systematically exposing their true identities? Not to the press, or the public, but to the families of their victims. Who deserves justice? And who gets to decide?

This is a complex subject in my view and all sides were explored in the book without losing the entertainment value of a story. Hats off to Claire Rushbrook whose performance was incredible and utterly believable - even in those scenes which covered the most extreme emotions. Not my first book by this author and definitely not my last. I was completely absorbed in it and my opinions on the basic premise swayed throughout..

Intriguing idea, well done

I listen to many mystery/thrillers and the idea of this drew my interest as something a bit different. Rather than becoming silly after an initial burst of promise I felt this plot just kept going. It also raised thoughts to ponder whilst listening to, and after finishing, the book.

Despite the uncomfortable base to this story I could not stop listening to it. I found the main characters sufficiently developed to enhance the progress of the plot.
The narration was excellent - covering a variety of voice types and delivering the emotions in a compelling and believable way.

Story
Late October 1909, and the season of ghouls and things that go bump in the night has descended on the village of Littleton Cotterell. Lady Hardcastle and her trusted lady’s maid, Florence, find themselves hosting a colorful cast of actors whose spooky moving picture, The Witch’s Downfall, is being shown to mark Halloween. But things take a macabre turn when the first night’s screening ends with a mysterious murder, and the second night with another. One by one the actors turn up dead in ways that eerily echo their film.
