This was a total disappointment. A story thst goes nowhere.

i thought it was a road trip/ coming of age story.

unfortunately its a dry pretentious reflection upon the past.

Harris has done an incredible amount of research into this book and should be commended.
As an account of the Dreyfus affair its a valuable text but as a Novel it really falls short of a plot worthy subject.

Its neither a gripping story nor a thriller. The large list of characters with French alternative names and military titles makes it difficult to keep track. Harris also jumps back and forth in time, a pet hate of mine in a novel and so much repetition of the same issues in repetitive court trials. The Petite Bleu this and the Petite Blue that.

I'm a Robert Harris addict but i have to rank this one as the least of interest to me.

Really enjoyed this. Download a family tree as there are so many Jolyons in the Forsyte family and lots of relatives.. Dry wit, remarkable social commentary, rich character build and some very amusing characters.

The prose is beautiful, Many sentences and quotes worthy of note.
Long sentences but an easier & more gripping read than Henry James.
Similar style, subject and era to Trollope but a much smoother and more accessible read.

A classic gem of English literature, often overlooked.

The narrator is inconsistent.
Most of the time she mumbles and goes really quiet, i have to check if the sounds gone off.

Then suddenly she shouts or screams or starts singing the tune that runs through the novel that is extremely irritating.

I remember loving the 1974 TV series. Unfortunately the book doesn't flow well, its poorly structured and hops around between stories that it's easy to get lost or fit most of it to just go right long your head.

Not the most riveting story.

This was a bit of a slog, so many chapters, so little happens.

Not really a page turner.

It seems that he's constantly chasing the dlsve girl.

I'm afraid this did nothing for me or my faith. The musings of a man with two much time on his hands.
His long allegorical philosophical analogies bear little tradition to the point he's trying to make.
He repeats the same message in non stop rather dull anecdotes without ever coming to the point.

If you are looking for spiritual inspiration or just a reason to believe, this is not a place to start or even finish.

A slow burn classic.
A classic that is best enjoyed sipped like a fine wine.

Not for those looking for an exciting page turning plot but for those who love the English language, character examination and subtle dry humour.

A Proustian style Bildungsroman.

Stephen Crossly is one of the best narrators on Audible.

I didn't warm to the way this book is written.
A Somewhat silly way of delivering the message as if to a class if children. With cringe attempts at humour.

I felt that rather than make a complex subject easier to digest, the nonsense distracted from the subject matter and is actually quite irritating and time wasting.

Its a shame as there is interesting information here but it's completely lost as a result of the authors banal style.

I don't get the "life changing" reviews from others.

This is mostly a rambling stream of consciousness about how the Enlightenment has looked to technological progress through questions and explanation (a word he uses in every sentence) and how religion, mythology, ancient classics are all bad and held mankind back for millenia.

Which really isn't true because out of these periods came some of the most creative art, architecture and literature in human history that define Western culture and who we are as a species.

There's nothing new or revelatory here.
