I love the idea of slow living and this book is a nice and insightful introduction. It’s not as deep as I’d particularly like but then I started off with Thich Nhat Hanh books so anything is a step down. But this is a good, modern take on mindful living. Unfortunately, somewhat ironically given the topic of slow living, although competent, the narrator talks too fast for my taste and her tone is a little abrasive perhaps. Worth checking out if you’re interested.

I’ve read a couple of Dispenza’s books and found them filled with helpful ideas. There’s not a single new thing; it’s basically the same premise taken from older material such as Psycho-Cybernetics and Neville Goddard, with a large amount of science to contextualise it (some claim pseudoscience as I’m not entirely sure how much of it stacks up).

I did think I’d find this of benefit but I’m struggling with the simple fact that I find Joe Dispenza rather annoying to listen to. He’s not particularly likeable to me, and there’s an almost culty dynamic to the way he interacts with the audience and their overexcited hollering. I find it disingenuous the way he calls himself “Dr Joe” and makes out he’s some cutting edge physicist when he’s actually just a chiropractor and his doctorate is from a now discredited school.

Worst of all is the infuriating was he interjects the words “Are you with me still?” after practically every third or fourth sentence. There are times when it’s particularly extreme. Are you with me still? It was like hearing nails creaking down a chalkboard each time. Are you with me still? I kept saying to myself, “God, next time he says that I’m switching off, I can’t take any more of this.” And sure enough, three seconds later…are you with me still?

I don’t know if I can bring myself to listen to much more. I did skip to the end and I like the chakra meditation. I advise caution on the kundalini central channel breathing he recommends. This is stuff that should not be experimented with without a qualified teacher (and if Dr Joe was he’d know this). This energy is actually very real and I’ve known people who dabbled and ended up debilitated with with chronic and even psychosis. Please be very wary.

On the whole, I don’t think I’d recommend this. The material is all taken and repackaged from other, better sources, and I’m not win over by Dr Joe. Are you still with me?
