Is the problem with the Dark Web or is it us? If we think we can get away with something, it's only human to be tempted — isn't it? So is our online behaviour that surprising, when our identities are hidden? The issue of an internet where everyone is anonymous is discussed by Geoff White, Channel 4 News's former Technology Reporter.

I must have had a sheltered life as every episode of this opened my eyes. I found it really informative and enjoyable and educational in a non patronising way.

Story
How to Come Alive Again is a funny, honest, broken audiobook written by an author who could be described as the same. It is a combination of self-help audiobook, memoir and polemical lifestyle guide. It lays out the basics for mending your life, accepting yourself, changing what doesn’t work, killing the worst of it and learning to live through depression. It’s an audiobook about what to do when you’re an anxious, depressed, spaghetti-brained mess in a society that still prefers us to act normal and never talk about our mental health.

Not for me

I just couldn’t finish this. It was basic and unhelpful. I didn’t learn anything.
Yea I know I need to get up, block time, relax the to do list, talk kinder to myself, make sure I put a wash on. But how? The mechanics, the toolkit to get the most simple tasks achieved.
Luckily after many years of depression I have a toolkit but am always keen to learn. This book just didn’t give me that.

And we remained friends…..: until they died
Reviewed: 21-07-22
There are some wonderful nuggets in this book. But it does read of a rollerdex of who she knows and has met/worked with. This book is also littered with heavy political posturing which I could have done without. Some political sentiments I agreed with and some I did not but I don’t believe such depth of feeling has a place in this type of book.
The saddest thing for me were how many people Myriam writes about and then ends with “..and we remained friends, until they died”. It made me sad at the amount of loss she has suffered but also made me aware of my own mortality and the short time we have in this world.
There are some good anecdotes and humour nestled between the sadness and political spouting, sadly they don’t shine as I thought they would.

Story
Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

The sound quality is poor. Also this book is overly heavy on the “F” word. I am no prude and even for me it was unnecessary, seemingly thrown in to appear cool and relatable.

Story
In Happy Derren Brown explores changing concepts of happiness - from the surprisingly modern wisdom of the Stoics and Epicureans in classical times right up until today, when the self-help industry has attempted to claim happiness as its own. He shows how many of self-help’s suggested routes to happiness and success – such as positive thinking, self-belief and setting goals – can be disastrous to follow and, indeed, actually cause anxiety. Happy aims to reclaim happiness and to enable us to appreciate the good things in life, in all their transient glory.

I stuck with this book for six chapters but then admitted defeat. I did not complete this book. Heavy on religion, philosophy and history. Delivered in quite an arrogant way by someone who is clearly very privileged and who makes zero connection with mere mortals like me.
I love audio books and I love Derren but this book was a complete heavy turn off me.

Written to take advantage of the brief window between the end of lockdown and Jimmy getting cancelled for saying something unforgivable to Lorraine Kelly, this book is as timely as it is unnecessary. Because you might be interested in Jimmy's life but he's damn sure you're a lot more interested in your own, Before & Laughter is about both of you. But mainly him.

Not what I expected
Reviewed: 14-03-22
I expected an autobiography… what I got was a self help book from the eyes of a comedian with the odd nugget or story about his life.
Initially it jumped all over the place as my brain tried to figure it out but I kept with it and eventually I quite enjoyed it. Quirky, different but not exactly life changing.

I nearly gave up
Reviewed: 23-05-21
This book just felt slow. The initial dream sequences were annoying and filled with unnecessary celebrity name drops or tv show mentions. I feel this makes the book one that won’t age well as in ten years time is anyone going to remember these things? Also the name drop off Tom of McFly made me laugh out loud, completely unnecessary.
I nearly gave up with the book but once “Real Bret” made an appearance and the dreams subsided the book felt more real. The story was a little thin and predictable and drawn out but passed a few hours.
Not the best book I have read in a while. Which is a shame as I read this book after reading The Eve of Man series and I had such high hopes as I loved those books.

Third in the series and yet still captivating

Just a lovely book. The story picked up from where book two left off and flowed nicely. The secret kept me guessing which was nice as usually with books like this you know what is coming.
I don’t think the book needed two narrators as sometimes having two different voices for one character got a bit confusing.
Loved this book..... when is the next one due?
Not a fan of cliffhangers... especially now I have to wait to hear what happens next.
Totally recommend the Hedgehog Hollow series. The hedgehog knowledge is a bonus and just lovely.

An excellent book which is heavy in facts, figures and dates and at times I had to put it down and come back to later. The subject matter is very heavy, understandably so but it just felt never ending. I think this book suits a hard copy format better where text can easily be highlighted and referred to in the future

Story
No Shame is a very funny, candid and emotional ride of a memoir by one of our most beloved comedians. The working-class son of a coach driver and the youngest member of the Noel Coward Society, Tom Allen grew up in '90s suburbia as the eternal outsider. In these hilarious, honest and heart-breaking stories Tom recalls observations on childhood, his adolescence, the family he still lives with and his attempts to come out and negotiate the gay dating scene. They are written with his trademark caustic wit and warmth, and will entertain, surprise and move you in equal measure.

The carefully chosen stories were poignant and did the job of getting the story across. Delivered in a whitty style I found myself laughing out loud. I wanted more whitty stories and I also want Tom to be my best friend, his underlying insecurities and his passion in not conforming, along with a whit that is sharp made me want to know more.
