Story
Steve Wheeler is enjoying retired life in the New Forest. He does the odd bit of investigation work, but he likes his familiar habits and routines. His days of adventure are over: adrenaline is daughter-in-law Amy’s business now. Amy Wheeler thinks adrenaline is good for the soul: she doesn’t stay still long enough for a habit or routine. She’s currently on a private island keeping world-famous author Rosie D’Antonio alive. Which was meant to be an easy job. Then a dead body, a bag of money, and a killer with their sights on Amy mean an end to Steve’s quiet life.

Another Winner

Richard Osman has done it again..!! Having enjoyed all the TTMC books and growing to love those characters, I was looking forward to this new avenue of fiction from RO and I was not disappointed. It’s a very good storyline and I quickly felt engaged with the characters (particularly Steve).

Interesting story

I always enjoy Jeffrey Archer books - he tells a good story and this did not disappoint. I was perhaps a little disappointed with the ending and I’m wondering if there is a sequel..? However, I didn’t really enjoy the narration - the way the book is structured you jump between the lives of the two main characters even within a chapter and it was hard to know which character you were on. It would have helped if the narrator had paused slightly to indicate this or had more definitive voices for each of the characters.

Story
Kitty Baxter was born in London in 1930, the daughter of a road sweeper and a cleaner and one of five children. War broke out just as Kitty turned nine and she became one of thousands of children evacuated to the countryside. This would be the first of three times that she was rehoused far from home over the course of the war. Sometimes treated more like a servant than a small child, Kitty endured gruelling years cut off from her parents rather than a safe haven from war.

A Beautiful Record

This is a wonderful record of how it felt to be an evacuee in WW2. So many of Kitty and her family’s experiences resonated with me having listened to my own Mother and her siblings stories from that time. It was a very difficult experience for a lot of children and one that left lifelong scars. Thank you Kitty for preserving your memories for future generations.

Story
In this, her first ever book, Claudia invites us all into her world. This is a memoir with a difference (owing to its lack of a plot - genuinely, how do people do that?) and Claudia shares her observations on topics such as the importance of melted cheese, why black coats are vital, how it's never okay to have sex with someone who has an opinion on your date outfit, how nurses are our most precious national treasure and why colourful clothing is only for the under 10s (if you're reading this sporting a bright red jumper and you're nine, great! If you're older, sorry).

I loved this book - a great gallop through Claudia Winkleman’s life and view on life. I found myself laughing out loud and agreeing with practically all she has to say.
