This story carries a wonderful mix of the subtleties of Maturin craft, the psychological struggles within both men and finishes with one of the most swashbuckling raw battles. Perhaps my favourite of the series.

The Confusion is definitely the best part of the Baroque cycle. The shift between the two parts of the story works well. There is a wonderful sense of scale and adventure as Jack and his band travel to all corners of the world.

The shift of narrator after the first two books of the trilogy is a real pain. The voice characterisations generally in this one grated for me. All that said - the best novel of the three. Worth making the adjustment. Leaves you keen to see the story revisited at some point ...
