Glory returns to Fenris. Magnus the Red and his traitorous legion are defeated upon the icy cliffs of the Space Wolves’ home world, their hollow remains scattered into the darkest depths of the World Sea. Yet Ragnar Blackmane, the youngest Wolf Lord in his Chapter’s noble history, does not feel victorious. He is uneasy. Uncertain of his purpose and place in the great war for the Imperium. Until a vision strikes him of a terrible beast, one greater than any he or his warriors have faced before.

Really refreshing and down to earth. Fantastic advice, and so much more refreshing for folks like me that genuinely want to cut, not quit.
As an ale drinker, I love the craft, the taste and the heritage of the ales I drink. ‘Never again’ feels like it’s just not going to work, especially given I was drinking ‘little and often’ with zero impact on my personal or professional life.
Will listen again.

Natural history on point. But that’s about it
Reviewed: 24-12-23
I really wanted to enjoy this.
Unfortunately…. I didn’t.
The author pops up at the end, and up until then, I had no idea how this had been commissioned. Then when I heard the author I got it. She sounds awesome and engaging, and able to bring the natural world to life.
Unlike the book.
Lots of ‘we’ve not left the garden in 300 years’, then on stumbling into an electrified modern city we look to the guy who was last in a city… what, pre Industrial Revolution? And he claims it’s only changed a bit.
Cats and rats completely unknown in the suburbs and wild apparently but rampant in the city.
And the deer…. There just seems to be a pseudo mythical quality ascribed to them. There are plenty of deer in the uk.
The storytelling… I’m a big fan of ‘show don’t tell’ but again, characters who have lived with each other for centuries feel the need to expound on things that they encounter like they’re all novel and new. And bicker like children.
Not only that, but as guardians… how or why exactly have they all just abandoned their posts like Britain is now just concrete and houses? And how did they ‘guard’? Pitted against house cat they’re useless.
And don’t start me on the constant ‘would you like a hug’. If I’d been hanging around with someone for SEVERAL CENTURIES I’d like to think id be able to read the room and perhaps forgo woke permission seeking.
Finally the narrator. Fair play for trying to diversify the voices but… starlings with faux London gangta voices, innit.
If only the last 5 minutes had been applied to the whole book, with the author narrating her own work, great. Might have been better.

Nothing is more inspiring than a big vision that becomes a triumphant new reality. But more modest endeavours, whether launching a small business, organizing a conference, or just finishing a work project on time, commonly fail. Why? Understanding what distinguishes the triumphs from the failures has been the life’s work of Oxford professor Bent Flyvbjerg. In How Big Things Get Done, he identifies the errors that lead projects to fail, and the research-based principles that will make yours succeed.

I really enjoyed the whole series. But this last book was…special.
The narrator does an astounding job (as always).
But the writing here explores the horrors of war, and the ties that bind us.
Having been attracted after seeing the series, I expected action packed urban fantasy, and got so much More than I bargained for.

In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power - the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion. I was a bit nervous having read some of the ‘this is sacrilege, we only need Rob Inglis’ reviews.
However, I loved this. Andy did a phenomenal job. Obviously Gollum is brilliant, but the hint of the film actors - not a perfect facsimile- added so much depth.
As one who quite frankly skipped the songs a lot when I read the book, I actually found the singing- while it’s not going to get any musicians excited - passable. Can’t wait for the next ones!

Not every danger comes in the form of a mega-threat like a Titan. Some predators are a lot cozier...more personal. When one such creature threatens an independent tutor, Harry Dresden must shake off the blood and dirt of his most recent battles and rise to the occasion, even when it turns out that the new predator is far more dangerous and connected than first appearances would suggest.

No.
But he did a great job. And the bloopers at the end made me chuckle.
Short story, but knocks it out the park again. Loved it.

Still superb- ignore the brexit reviews….
Reviewed: 18-12-21
Superb.
Wasn’t sure if I’d like this given the reviews, but it feels like they’ve totally missed the point. Our wonderful nation is made from many wonderful nations. There are those that see that, and, asking questions, embrace it. And those that sing ‘rule Britannia’ without knowing the real words.
It’s not overly PC. It’s recognising that there are huge swathes of British folk under represented so far. And it’s recognising the general awkwardness, wonderfully, as only Richard can.
Excellent book. Deals with very human issues.
And it takes a bloody brilliant book to divert the story from a huge cliffhanger and still make it un-put-downable.
And the narration is getting better with every book. I was a little unsure to start with, but after I got over my ‘that’s not Dave’ wobble, it now IS Dave, and the rest of the cast came alive. Some new characters I really like in this one, too.
