I really did have to check that this wasn’t written for older children : the language was so simplistic and basic in content. The narration was pretty awful, character depictions were very stereotypical and the story in general was as deep as a small puddle and highly unlikely. Will I continue with the next two? Also highly unlikely.

Dreadful delivery, dull with poor pronunciation of names and places.

At times I found it hard to be clear who the author was referring to as he jumps from first person to third person at an alarming rate. The regular mispronunciation of names and places was really irritating, surely either an English or Southern African voice would be more appropriate.
I’m five chapters in to this and can’t decide whether or not to finish it. I’m interested in the period it describes but not sure it’s worth the pain. I think this is my first regretted Audible purchase.
Have discovered I can get a refund- this is the answer I think to what is an anti -black right wing nightmare.

Up to the description of the battle and the immediate aftermath, all is fine but what follows is a further 12 hours of sifting through every detail & name include masses of repetition and I suspect a good bit of contradiction. Thoroughly recommend the transcript of Colour Sergeant Bourne’s 1930s radio broadcast.

Iommi is a real hero of mine so I need to be careful how I word this.
The writing is awful but you get used to it : once he reaches the Sabbath parts of his life it improves a lot.
I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised by the drug usage described in the book but for me it takes away from what I thought was his strong character.
The double standards are amazing from someone who is appalled at a bottle being thrown at the band on stage but thinks nothing of pretty volatile pranks on band members or nearly throwing a girl off a balcony !!!
It’s made me go back to the first few albums and research some newer ones : still my hero Tony, just stick to the day job !!!

A well researched book but let let down by some odd mistakes.
Referring to SAS troops as “agents” is quite simply wrong.
There were a number of strange German pronunciations and the occasional French howler ( Vosges mountains) - how about some proof listening ! Finally McKenna’s death was said to be on Valentines Day 1944 instead of 1994.
Enjoyed this but all of the above definitely detracts from the final work.

The resume of the escape was pretty much the standard depiction of this remarkable event : I’d have been more impressed if the author had included information from Guy Walter’s “The Real Great Escape” which told the whole story right down to the input by German personnel either for gain or by blackmail.

Pretty dull narrative and some tenuously linked side stories. Great people stuff which is when the book is at its best. Tech anoracs will probably love it but I can’t help but feel we didn’t get the whole story of the Mosquito Men.

Outstanding - a broad sweeping history that just took me with it! Fascinating overlaps with other special forces stories.

Excellent in depth research & reporting of this very dark but human story. Encourages one to dig further.
