Story
England, 1914. The world is at war. Captain Hastings, injured and shaken, is invited to Styles Court to recover. It’s a grand old country house - the family home of his old friend - and a perfect haven. Or so it seems. But in the blistering summer heat, trouble is afoot. Simmering tensions are tearing the family apart, and it all comes to a head in the most horrifying way.

A perfect combination of excellent writing, superlative acting and mesmeric production. Dinklage is brilliant as Poirot, and it can't be an easy role to finesse. I sincerely hope this is the start of a series!

Story
England, May 1536. Anne Boleyn is dead, decapitated in the space of a heartbeat by a hired French executioner. As her remains are bundled into oblivion, Thomas Cromwell breakfasts with the victors. The blacksmith's son from Putney emerges from the spring's bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry VIII, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen. Cromwell is a man with only his wits to rely on; he has no great family to back him, no private army.

Immersive writing, beautifully read
Reviewed: 05-01-24
I've just reached the end of the trilogy and I'm already wondering what I'm going to do without my daily Cromwell check-ins. The observations made by Mantel are astute and there is plenty humour to be found under the grim and impotent watch of Henry VIII.
I've read a few reviews which claimed the narration wasn't up to much, but my experience is that Ben Miles really brings the characters to life.

Predictable, but enjoyable notwithstanding
Reviewed: 25-03-23
I didn't expect to like this as much as I did. From the first few pages, it's abundantly clear where the narrative is going, but by the end it didn't matter. Just as one can enjoy a walk one always takes, the predictability of the end point in no way detracted from the pleasure derived from reaching it. Well written and beautifully performed.

I honestly can't watch the TV adaptation of these novels as Glenister will always be "my" Strike. The combination of Rowling's excellent storytelling - occasional contrivances notwithstanding - and Glenister's superlative performance make for unmissable listening.

Story
Alison Hart, a medium by trade, tours the dormitory towns of London's orbital ring road with her flint-hearted sidekick, Colette, passing on messages from beloved dead ancestors. But behind her plump, smiling persona hides a desperate woman: she knows the terrors the next life holds but must conceal them from her wide-eyed clients. At the same time she is plagued by spirits from her own past, who infiltrate her body and home, becoming stronger and nastier the more she resists....

It's rarely that one comes across so perfect a combination of narrative and performer. I'd not even heard of this early Mantel until it popped up on Audible and it's a beauty. Everything for which the author was subsequently recognised in Wolf Hall and Bring up the Bodies is in here, and the narration of Anna Bentinck brings it to life in a way I've seldom experienced with other - often better-known - readers. This is a recording that will reward every listen and every listener.

Whilst critics might consider the treatment of mental illness to be less than deft, the author's afterword and Denzil's assured reputation for pacy thrillers makes this a characteristically gripping story. Characteristic also are the flawed protagonists and uncertain alliances formed in trying conditions. Denzil never disappoints.

Story
Roses, pleasure, and politics: a fresh take on Orwell as an avid gardener, whose political writing was grounded in his passion for the natural world. "Outside my work the thing I care most about is gardening" wrote George Orwell in 1940. Inspired by her encounter with the surviving roses that Orwell planted in his cottage in Hertfordshire, Rebecca Solnit explores how his involvement with plants, particularly flowers, illuminates his other commitments as a writer and antifascist, and the intertwined politics of nature and power.

Sometimes illuminating accidental ASMR

The structure of this book is all over the place and a mere fraction of it deals with both Orwell and Roses at the same time. Lots of tangential explorations and some obvious padding at times, notwithstanding which it remains insightful. By accident or design, the narrator - while evidently surprised by occasional words or passages - is deliciously soporific.

There's always something special about an expert talking with passion about a pet subject, and this recording shows clearly just how invested Goulson is in his subject. As well as acquainting the lay-reader with a wealth of insights - whilst avoiding condescension the whole time - this book is a motivational, practical volume packed with ideas from the instantly manageable to longer-term community projects. With the climate crisis at the back of every conscientious mind, this required reading.

I'm not sure why some reviewers don't like the actor reading this. Sure, it's a bit disorientating when there are at least three different performers reading the available Wexford range; but this was as well done as the rest, merely different.
