The premise was great. The actual story and characters predictable, nothing particularly twisty or riveting and the fact you can guess what is going to happen the whole way along, doesnt add for any surprises. Bit of a disappointment and by the time I got to the end of the book, I was so over hearing about "my sister", I was almost hoping the killer would finish them all off in the bedroom and escape into the darkness! Now you wouldn't have seen that coming!

The truth has no place in a courtroom. The truth doesn't matter in a trial. The only thing that matters is what the prosecution can prove. Eddie Flynn used to be a con artist. Then he became a lawyer. Turned out the two weren't that different. It's been more than a year since Eddie vowed never to set foot in a courtroom again. But now he doesn't have a choice. Olek Volchek, the infamous head of the Russian mafia in New York, has strapped a bomb to Eddie's back and kidnapped his ten-year-old daughter, Amy.

Story
Detective Sergeant Washington Poe is in court, fighting eviction from his beloved and isolated croft, when he is summoned to a backstreet brothel in Carlisle where a man has been beaten to death with a baseball bat. Poe is confused—he hunts serial killers and this appears to be a straightforward murder-by-pimp—but his attendance was requested personally, by the kind of people who prefer to remain in the shadows. As Poe and the socially awkward programmer Tilly Bradshaw delve deeper into the case, they are faced with seemingly unanswerable questions.

Cannot understand the reviews
Reviewed: 18-07-21
I must be getting very cynical for when I download a supposedly cracking thriller from a top notch author I expected nothing more than what the reviews stated. Instead of listening to to well rounded characters with depth and meaning, complex plot and procedure, I got a silly over narrated story that was so implausible I gave up after chapter 12.
Personally to listen to someone explaining a game with broomsticks and how much fun it is, while at some secret M15 location really doesn't sit well with me. The fact that this character is in her 30''s, incredibly intelligent, no doubt high on the spectrum raises issues, when the author decides to make her sound like a 5 year old. Or has the narrator chosen to make this character sound more ridiculous than need be. Either way what could have been a darkly enjoyable series, set in an interesting part of Britain has instead been turned into teen fiction dumbed down for the masses.
Not for me,

Story
Slough House is Jackson Lamb’s kingdom; a dumping ground for members of the intelligence service who’ve screwed up: left a secret file on a train, blown surveillance, or become drunkenly unreliable. They’re the service’s poor relations – the slow horses – and bitterest among them is River Cartwright, whose days are spent transcribing mobile phone conversations.

Slow Horses was a find from another reviewer and I decided to give it a go. Something a little different from my usual choice of audio. All I can say is that I have now finished the latest book in this series, London Rules, book 5, and each instalment just gets better, funnier, and thoroughly entertaining. Sean Barrett narrates absolutely perfectly, his Jackson Lamb is spot on and brings to life this revolting character in full brilliant colour. With a wonderful twist of spook, espionage political intrigue and a touch of reality, this series lends to an excellent listen with many funny one liners to keep you on your toes. And of course there is a touch of Russian thrown in to one of the instalments to ensure the spy theme is kept alive.

I am afraid I have hung up my wireless earphones at chapter 40 but I would like to state I gave this audio a sterling effort and tried very hard to listen to it. However it got to the point when I asked myself why listen to B rated books when there are so many wonderful A+ listens to chose from.
If the terrible banter, if you can call it that, between the lead characters wasn't nauseating enough the storyline just went from ridiculous to well ridiculous. It all finally came to a halt for me when Karl calls his 6 month pregnant wife to warn her of impending danger from ruthless killers who already know where they live, that they will stop at nothing to hurt her and their baby, to pack her bag and get out. Well I dont know about you but if I got a call like that, Im out of there without a bag, just my passport in hand and calling for a taxi to the nearest airport.. Of course wife replies she is not leaving her home, but instead is going to get her nails done... Really? we are living in the 21st Century full of violence, home invasions, muggings, threats from every corner of the world.. All I can say is that I am waiting for ITV to pick this up for its new 4 part serial thriller, I am sure it will be a massive hit. They love drivel like this.

Story
The international number one best seller returns with his most captivating and suspenseful novel yet - perfect for fans of Stieg Larsson and Jo Nesbo. In a Copenhagen park, the body of an elderly woman is discovered. Though the case bears a striking resemblance to another unsolved homicide from over a decade ago, the police cannot find any connection between the two victims. Across town a group of young women are being hunted down. The attacks seem random, but could these acts of violence be related?

Absolutely terrific

Dont be put off that the wonderful narrator Stephen Pacey is no longer Carl Morck and Department Q. Saul Reichlin steps up to the role perfectly. Yes he may be a slower more enunciated narrator than Mr Pacey, but once you get used to his rhythm and balance, you find yourself once again totally absorbed in the story. Jussi-Adler-Olsen, does not disappoint and even though Carl has become slightly more sombre, Department Q a darker place, there is still the sense of humour and moments where you burst out laughing at the comments and thoughts of Carl or from the wonderful Assad.
From the very first instalment of Department Q and one of the rare series I have listened to again, I am delighted to recommend book 7 to all who enjoy the writing and style of Mr Adler-Olsen. it does start out slow and the characters in the beginning are not particularly likeable but as you get more involved in the story and the characters are rounded out you can easily believe these people actually exist.
Looking forward to book number 8.

Any additional comments?
Whenever I finish a Tim Weaver book, I think never again. Then I go and buy another and wonder why I did that. What a ridiculous storyline. Could the author stuff anything else into an already over stuffed plot which is so unbelievable you have to laugh? Amensia, deception, murder, embezelling, drugs, lonely islands, cruise ships, interogation, monsters.... step sisters, prostitutes... , sinister comings and goings, and all solved by the intrepid David Raker who seems to have bottomless pockets and can trip around the world solving mysteries no other person can solve. Yawn. All narrated in a grey dreary voice to match the whole humourless story. I lost count how many times I had to keep going back to previous chapters as I found my mind had wandered away from the storyline or the fact I didnt even particularly care. 13 hours listening to a book touted as a best seller, tense thriller, a page turner... Definitely the last time for me.

Tana French is a tremendous author. Her books are beautifully written, descriptive, the characters have depth and a fullness so often missed by other authors. Her books take time to get into but once you get used to her rhythm and pace the story flows and becomes alive. Obviously I am a fan of Tana French. Well worth a listen. Broken Harbour was my first book by her and since then have never yet been disappointed. Thoroughly enjoying the murder squad series.
