Story
Lina is just like any other 15-year-old Lithuanian girl in 1941. She paints, she draws, she gets crushes on boys - until one night when Soviet officers barge into her home, tearing her family from the comfortable life they've known. Separated from her father, forced onto a crowded and dirty train car, Lina, her mother, and her young brother slowly make their way north, crossing the Arctic Circle, to a work camp in the coldest reaches of Siberia.

The narrators voice was far too chirpy for the sadness of the story. This really hindered the story for me. Could have been so much better

Story
In late March 1944, as Stalin’s forces push into Ukraine, young Emil and Adeline Martel must make a terrible decision: Do they wait for the Soviet bear’s intrusion and risk being sent to Siberia? Or do they reluctantly follow the wolves - murderous Nazi officers who have pledged to protect “pure-blood” Germans? The Martels are one of many families of German heritage whose ancestors have farmed in Ukraine for more than a century.

So much unknown history revealed. I was captivated by this story, especially as it was based on the lives of a real family. I didn’t have a lot of knowledge of the society side of WW2 & its aftermath. Definitely worth a read.

Story
It is the spring of 1939 and three generations of the Kurc family are doing their best to live normal lives, even as the shadow of war grows closer. The talk around the family Seder table is of new babies and budding romance, not of the increasing hardships threatening Jews in their hometown of Radom, Poland. But soon the horrors overtaking Europe will become inescapable, and the Kurcs will be flung to the far corners of the world, each desperately trying to navigate his or her own path to safety.

Incredible story based on true life events. The history of the holocaust still astounds me beyond belief. This is a story of a very brave family of Polish Jews & their lives in such unthinkable terror & chaos.

Although linked to an era of tragedy involving slavery, this story highlights the influence of love & friendship. Two sides of the story are told. One from a white Irish girl who has been taken into the folds of an enslaved family, and the other from an enslaved woman.
Brilliantly written& narrated.

Story
Soon to be a major TV series starring Kenneth Branagh. On 21 June 1922, Count Alexander Rostov - recipient of the Order of Saint Andrew, member of the Jockey Club, Master of the Hunt - is escorted out of the Kremlin, across Red Square and through the elegant revolving doors of the Hotel Metropol. Deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the Count has been sentenced to house arrest indefinitely. But instead of his usual suite, he must now live in an attic room while Russia undergoes decades of tumultuous upheaval. Can a life without luxury be the richest of all?

Loved this novel with it quirks & personalities. I wasn’t convinced that a novel based on a gentleman on house arrest in a hotel would be interesting. But I loved it! Really enjoyed the characters & personalities. Great story!

Although as first I didn’t particularly like one of the characters, I enjoyed the dynamics of friendship between them all at the end. Easy read. Look forward the next novel.
