Story
Early in the morning of April 26, 1986, Reactor Number Four of the Chernobyl Atomic Energy Station exploded, triggering history’s worst nuclear disaster. In the 30 years since then, Chernobyl has become lodged in the collective nightmares of the world: shorthand for the spectral horrors of radiation poisoning, for a dangerous technology slipping its leash, for ecological fragility and for what can happen when a dishonest and careless state endangers not only its own citizens but all of humanity.

Chernobyl is one of my deep interests, it happened in the year I was born, and I've always been pretty obsessed by it. This book is absolutely excellent, picks up on threads that others don't, and digs into some of the people that are often left unmentioned in other accounts.
Well done by the reader too, especially with the complex Ukrainian and Russian names.

Story
A small group of eccentric researchers, experimenting on themselves from inside pressure tanks in the middle of the London air raids, explored the deadly science needed to enable the critical reconnaissance vessels and underwater breathing apparatuses that would enable the Allies' dramatic, history-making success during the next major beach landing: D-Day.

Interesting but disjointed

An interesting story, told alternately as pacy military history and slightly stodgy pop science writing.
Read by a British person, but clearly written by an American makes idioms a bit jarring ('did the math' for example)
This also leads to mistakes (by both writer and reader) writer gets British geography wrong on a couple of occasions, reader has a mispronunciation and occasional stumbling habit.
Made it to the end, but had higher hopes for this and it just didn't deliver.

Summer 1914. A world on the brink of catastrophe. In London, 26-year-old Venetia Stanley – aristocratic, clever, bored, reckless – is having a love affair with the Prime Minister, H. H. Asquith, a man more than twice her age. He writes to her obsessively, sharing the most sensitive matters of state. As Asquith reluctantly leads the country into war with Germany, a young intelligence officer is assigned to investigate a leak of top secret documents – and suddenly what was a sexual intrigue becomes a matter of national security that will alter the course of political history.

Another tour de force from Mr Harris. I knew basically nothing about the Asquith/Stanley affair, and this inspired me to look it up, the accuracy is amazing. It's sad, sweet, romantic, disturbing, and all of it against the background of bubbling international tensions then war. A masterpiece.
The reader has a very soothing and smooth voice, and is able to gently differentiate each character without harsh accents or silly voices. Excellent job.

Story
Apollo is the behind-the-scenes story of an epic achievement. Based on exhaustive research that included many exclusive interviews, Apollo tells how America went from a standing start to a landing on the moon at a speed that now seems impossible. It describes the unprecedented engineering challenges that had to be overcome to create the mammoth Saturn V and the facilities to launch it. It takes you into the tragedy of the fire on Apollo 1, the first descent to the lunar surface, and the rescue of Apollo 13.

A brilliant book that gets into just enough detail for the layperson to understand without bogging down in too much granular engineering. The history of such a seminal time in human exploration and scientific advancement, told carefully and allowing the personalities of the people involved to shine through.
Well read by the reader too.

Story
The first rule of nuclear war is that there are no rules. Up to now, no one outside of official circles has known exactly what would happen if a rogue state launched a nuclear missile at the Pentagon. Second by second and minute by minute, these are the real-life protocols that choreograph the end of civilisation as we know it. Because the plans for General Nuclear War are among the most classified secrets held by the United States government, this book takes the listener up to the razor’s edge of what can legally be known.

As a connoisseur of books about the Cold War, and Nuclear Weapons, I thought I knew what to expect from this. I was wrong. I got the broad strokes right, but the details were absolutely harrowing. Amazing job.
Being read by the author lends a certain passion to the performance, however she does have an idiosyncratic way of pronouncing a few words that does get annoying sometimes (Trident for example)

In Patient Zero, Richard A. A fascinating and moving book that rewrites a wrong done to one man via the historical record. Along the way, the early years of the North American AIDS epidemic are sensitively and carefully explored.
I wept at several points during the book.
An important listen for anyone who cares about epidemiology or queer history.
The reader gave a very gentle and sensitive performance, and should be commended.

Meanwhile, Caesar tends to business in Aquileia, unaware that he is cut off from the bulk of his army in the north by the rebellion. Fronto and his friends are heading for a clash of armies the likes of which the north has never seen, and the Tenth's legate is about to face his most trying year yet.
