Unlikeable characters, endless waffle, one of those endings where everything is explained in a couple of pages. I saw it through to the end on a long drive, glad it was free.

Drags on but an interesting subject matter so I ploughed on, thinking I could work out the 'who dunnit'. I wish I hadn't bothered; the last couple of hours get twisitier and twisitier until it's just ridiculous. The final sentence made me laugh out loud.

Story
Albert and Alice Graves live a normal, if monotonous, domestic life. They never had children; they spend their days tending to their home and enjoying their time together. One day, when the oil man, Richard, is refilling their furnace, Alice invites him to dinner, never suspecting that a casual act of charity will lead to a horrifying, morbid discovery in the crawlspace underneath their beloved house.

This was a freebie but having read it, I would have gladly paid. It's creepy and atmospheric and I wasn't sure which direction the story would go. Excellent narration, I could really believe that he was the main character.
I've given the story itself 4 stars though, because (spoiler alert)....
I don't think the trippy description of Albert's near death experience was necessary and wasn't really in keeping with the rest of the book.

I still dream, every night, of Polneath on fire. Smoke unravelling from an upper window, and the terrace bathed in a hectic orange light.... Now I see that the decision I made at Polneath was the only decision of my life. Everything marred in that one dark minute.

Dull and very putdownable
Reviewed: 11-07-22
I enjoyed The Witchfinder's Sister so thought I'd give this a go, but it was so dull, I couldn't get past the first half a dozen chapters, and that took forever as I had to skip back a few minutes each time as I'd forgotten what had happened: it was so dull I had drifted off. I tried, I really did!
The narrator's flat delivery does nothing to incite any interest in what amounts to a list of events and dull conversations.
Thank you to Audible for the 'return title' option.

Story
Frances had been picturing her lodgers in purely mercenary terms - as something like two great waddling shillings. But this, she thought, was what it really meant to have paying guests: this odd, unintimate proximity, this rather peeled-back moment, where the only thing between herself and a naked Mrs Barber was a few feet of kitchen and a thin scullery door. An image sprang into her head: that round flesh, crimsoning in the heat.

I loved 'Fingersmith' so was excited to read more Sarah Waters, but this was unnecessarily long, despite an interesting storyline and beautiful writing. I'll try another by this author as I still have faith in her work!
Juliet Stephenson saved the day, perfect narration.

Story
The Grand Hotel is a horror novel by esteemed best-selling author Scott Kenemore ( Zombie, Ohio) that takes the reader on a thrilling ride through an interconnected series of stories narrated by the desk clerk and the residents of the hotel itself. And while it is not known whether or not the desk clerk is actually the devil incarnate, it is strange that so many visitors who come for a tour of the hotel have a way of never leaving.

Story
Hugh of Singleton, fourth son of a minor knight, has been educated as a clerk, usually a prelude to taking holy orders. However, feeling no certain calling despite a lively faith, he turns to the profession of surgeon, training in Paris and then hanging out his sign in Oxford. A local lord asks him to track the killer of a young woman whose bones have been found in the castle cesspit. She is identified as the impetuous missing daughter of a local blacksmith, and her young man, whom she had provoked very publicly, is in due course arrested and sentenced at the Oxford assizes.

I managed the first few chapters before the narrator irritated me so much that I gave up. And I didn't care about the main character at all so wasn't invested enough to persevere. Glad it was free as otherwise I'd be asking for a refund.

She was the daughter of a preacher and a gypsy. A strange and elusive child with powers of prophecy, she grew into an even stranger woman. From those around her she inspired love and admiration or furious hatred. Nothing in between. And somehow Jassy could transform even those who loved her into her enemies. Barney Hatton, the dispossessed heir of Mortiboys, loved her but not enough. Lindy, a girl who worked there, loved her too much.
