Story
Summer 1914. A world on the brink of catastrophe. In London, 26-year-old Venetia Stanley – aristocratic, clever, bored, reckless – is having a love affair with the Prime Minister, H. H. Asquith, a man more than twice her age. He writes to her obsessively, sharing the most sensitive matters of state. As Asquith reluctantly leads the country into war with Germany, a young intelligence officer is assigned to investigate a leak of top secret documents – and suddenly what was a sexual intrigue becomes a matter of national security that will alter the course of political history.

Fascinating book
Reviewed: 29-12-24
The research which has been done for this book must have considerable. I think this has been one of the most riveting books I have heard/read in a long, long while. It is incredibly well written and, for the audible edition, superbly well read by Sam West. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

This has to be one of the most enjoyable books about DI Zoë Finch. The plot was excellent and was completely plausible. The narrator was also good. Am looking forward to the next in the series (although I can’t find it on Audible.

Yet another book which was hard to put down (fortunately there are so many by this author that it’s going to be a long time until I uncover them all)! The narratives of all the books end with a snippet from yet another of Ms. McLean’s books. To paraphrase a catch phrase from the TV “Keep writing!!” Pleeease?

I liked that this was the whole narrative with twists and turns that were understandable, if unexpected. The plot was really well thought out and the use of English was imaginative and thoughtful. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.

From the number-one best-selling author of The Ashes of London and The Fire Court this is the first instalment in the acclaimed Lydmouth series. Workmen in the small market town of Lydmouth are demolishing an old cottage. A sledgehammer smashes into what looks like a solid wall. Instead, layers of wallpaper conceal the door of a locked cupboard which holds a box - and in the box is the skeleton of a young baby.

The narrator really made this story. His enunciation, proficiency and ease of expression lent charm to an otherwise bland narrative (if murder can ever be considered bland?!!)

Story
London 1671. The damage caused by the Great Fire still overshadows the capital. When a man’s brutally disfigured body is discovered in the ruins of an ancient almshouse, architect Cat Hakesby is ordered to stop restoration work. It is obvious he has been murdered, and Whitehall secretary James Marwood is ordered to investigate. It’s possible the victim could be one of two local men who have vanished – the first, a feckless French tutor connected to the almshouse’s owner; the second, a possibly treacherous employee of the Council of Foreign Plantations.

The background of this story, is of the mid 17th century. Having done a little of the same, albeit with a different angle in mind, the anecdotes contained therein are completely plausible. The language used by the writer is fulsome and accurate and it is a pleasure to read. For anyone who has an ear to the 1600s, I can recommend this book unreservedly.

History brought to life

The fact of the persecution of the Huguenots is fairly well documented, this however, makes one think of the true meaning of that phrase. The research which has been done to pad out the bare bones was excellent. So, not only do we have a realistic narrative, we get a true feeling of the times, and what it meant to be a Huguenot.
