The story has a wide scope over generations, too wide for my taste. I found it very heavy going and predictable.

Pastice Gothik
Reviewed: 21-12-24
The story is classic mid Victorian Gothik novel, like Wilkie Collins, but it lacks the necessary authenticity. What is left in a shallow pastiche of the genre.

Strike One: My mother named me Theodore after her favorite chipmunk. Not cool, Mom. I‘ve spent most of my life answering to Teddy because I couldn’t make Theo work. Except for here. College. The place where all bets are off, and I’ve managed to redeem myself. There’s only one problem, my new roommate, Troy, is football royalty and looks like he stepped off the set of an Abercrombie shoot. Doesn’t matter, I cook a mean breakfast for his panty parade, and we get along well. And anyway, this year I got the girl. And she’s perfect. Everything's perfect...until Troy sees her.

When the reader's voices are so idiosyncratic, they should suit the characters they are meant to represent. In this case, it just doesn't work.

My new stepbrother is insufferable. You'd think it wouldn't matter since I won't be here for long, but this guy gets under my skin like no one ever has. All-American, baby-faced, blue-eyed band dork and star soccer player. Everything about him is the picture of perfection—unlike me. I don't think Do Gooder knows I'm starting senior year late. And he definitely doesn't know why. I've got secrets I'm taking with me to the grave.
