Brilliant Idea and a great listen

l enjoyed this and was totally engrossed..the combination of apocalyptic fiction and how a future humanity might evolve (devolve?) was thought provoking to say the least. But the ending was hugely unsatisfactory imho - it's begging for a sequel. Without the possibility of a sequel then it's all a bit bleak - but maybe that's the whole point?

Story
An imaginative, tight, edge-of-your-seat supernatural thriller which follows an historical mystery through to its nail-biting contemporary conclusion. The String Diaries. A jumble of entries, written in different hands, different languages, and different times. They tell of a rumour. A shadow. A killer. The only interest that Oxford Professor Charles Meredith has in the diaries is as a record of Hungarian folklore ... until he comes face to face with a myth.

l felt sad giving up on this book because the premise was potentially excellent. Narrator 'ok' but lacking expression... constant repetition of the phrase 'the baby ' drove me to distraction and I didn't care for the frequent references to sore nipples, for goodness sake , that's NOT relevant!!!

Gripping, intelligent and just too close to how the world is going for comfort. Another hell-scape of our own making brought to life by John Marrs, what's more it's a world that we seem to be ever eager to embrace. Not me - l'm off to smash up Alexa forthwith, drive my retro campervan to the outer Hebrides and live in a hut!! Fantastic ending which I didn't see coming, which just goes to show how easy it is to believe the narrative and kind of proved the point of the whole book. John Marrs the next Nostradamus? l really really hope not!

First time I have ever come across this author - this book deserves to be more well known, it's a really excellent thriller and has just about the best double plot twist at the end l have heard in ages. The narration is excellent throughout. Definitely recommend if you want something a bit different from the usual domestic thriller
