Story
From fake news to conspiracy theories, from pandemics to politics, misinformation may be the defining problem of our era. Like a virus, misinformation infects our minds – altering our beliefs and replicating at astonishing rates. Once the virus takes hold, our primary strategies of fact-checking and debunking are an insufficient cure. In Foolproof Sander van der Linden describes how to inoculate yourself and others against the spread of misinformation, discern fact from fiction and push back against methods of mass persuasion.

Story
Artificial intelligence is going to change the world as we know it. But the real danger isn't some robot that's going to enslave us: It's our own brain. Our brains are constantly making decisions using shortcuts, biases, and hidden processes—and we're using those same techniques to create technology that makes choices for us. In The Loop, award-winning science journalist Jacob Ward reveals how we are poised to build all of our worst instincts into our AIs, creating a narrow loop where each generation has fewer, predetermined, and even dangerous choices.

An Exploration of Technology's double edged sword.

Enjoyed it. This is a thought-provoking exploration of the increasingly intertwined relationship between human behavior and AI systems. Ward's book offers a unique perspective that goes beyond the surface-level narrative into the mechanisms through which technology manipulates and makes it easy for us not think, thereby fueling cycles of misinformation and restricted agency.
Ward cautions against the assumption that technology and capitalism unilaterally improve our lives. He argues that this positivist bias blinds us to the potential negative impacts of AI and capitalism.
Yet, the book is not all doom and gloom. Ward provides examples of AI researchers and legal battles that offer rays of hope, potentially preventing the complete closure of the 'loop'. These positive cases highlight the potential of AI to foster rather than constrict human agency which offers ways in which we can use technology to counteract harms and misinformation rather than propagate it.
