Story
Drawing on a wealth of previously classified intelligence archives, in multiple countries and languages, it reveals how Western and Eastern governments used spies, sabotage, subversion, and information warfare to battle each other during the conflict that dominated the twentieth century. Far from being a closed historical chapter, however, it shows that conflict's ghosts are still alive.

political bias
Reviewed: 03-04-24
this book contained much good information on espionage..and indeed I would have given a 4 until last couple of chapters.however once he reaches Russia he shows his left bias and rather than give an unbiased narrative it turns into an opinion piece,he glosses over the interception of USA /Allbright call when she is actually planning next Ukraine government, he does point out however USA is now classed as a flawed democracy.
He fails to point out the resignation of Head of GCHQ immediately he learned of Trumps win undoubtedly on fear that the fact GCHQ had been assisting Clinton would be exposed.
so fair to middling

excellent but flawed story telling

Excellent gloriously ponderous storytelling as usual.ive followed all his books screen paperback audible..always relaxing.
pity he let this become a hobby horse for for his left liberal views..obviously written before these views had come to fruition in USA ruined there economy ..Brought anarchy ruin and the verge of WW3..He obviously has a public schoolboys bias against the brashTrump and fails to take into account there were no new wars under him and all he warned about has come to pass.
It is probably a good thing le carre took up writing after his brief spying career as it would be easy to imagine him having gone same way as Philby..and probably getting away with it...as public school boys do.
In summary a decent yarn spoiled by using it for remoaning ..such a pity.

In The War on the West, international best-selling author Douglas Murray asks: if the history of humankind is a history of slavery, conquest, prejudice, genocide and exploitation, why are only Western nations taking the blame for it? It’s become, he explains, perfectly acceptable to celebrate the contributions of non-Western cultures, but discussing their flaws and crimes is called hate speech. What’s more it has become acceptable to discuss the flaws and crimes of Western culture, but celebrating their contributions is also called hate speech.

Story
This compelling book on Hitler and Stalin - the culmination of 30 years' work - examines the two tyrants during the Second World War, when Germany and the Soviet Union fought the biggest and bloodiest war in history. Yet despite the fact they were bitter opponents, Laurence Rees shows that Hitler and Stalin were, to a large extent, different sides of the same coin. Hitler's charismatic leadership may contrast with Stalin's regimented rule by fear, and his intransigence later in the war may contrast with Stalin's change in behaviour in response to events.
