Mainly about Katy but also all the women of Lavender Road, Clapham. How they survive amongst the terrible hardships of WWII showing perseverance and indomitable spirits. I loved listening to Annie Aldington’s versatile voice again. The story was gripping. It ought to be made into a TV series. Thank you Helen Carey. More please.

Liked it except that A4 paper is an anachronism. In those days, 1920s-1930s foolscap or quarto would have been used. A4 is a different size.

I loved this story as I was able to identify with such a lot of it: boarding school, being in the WRNS as a Writer, knowing Cornwall. I appreciated the character of Judith Dunbar, the heroine as being a capable, independent and considerate young lady. I learnt that it is sometimes better not to jump in and contribute to the conversation, but rather to keep quiet and listen.

The way the characters were drawn was good. In particular I liked Lily. Her mother Nellie is a gobbie salt of the earth woman who gives as good as she gets. She means well but suffers from the way she goes about things, nearly ending in prison. Romance and food feature highly.
I hope to see Lily’s character developed in future books. Will she become a married female doctor? I wonder.

I liked the irony in the book but not the pronunciation of mischievous as if it had an extra “i” in the ending. “Mischievious” is wrong.
