Story
The annals of movie history are full of lost treasures – spectacular scripts from world-renowned writers that could have been classics, had they only been made. Now, for the first time, some of these forgotten gems have been brought to life, fully realised as vivid, cinematic radio productions. Scripted by major 20th Century writers, they star a host of A-list actors and feature richly evocative, atmospheric soundtracks.

Just not for me
Reviewed: 06-03-24
I was expecting some clever writing and brilliant stories that clearly should have been made into films, but what I found was something quite different, probably best described as uninteresting stories with performances that came across as very dated. Overall somewhat disappointing.

Very long historical drama

Crumbs this book went on and on and on. Fantastically well read with each character having their own voice. The story overall was great although a few times I paused listening for a few days as it became a bit repetitive. I found some of the decisions made by Amber to be quite frustrating and irritating but I guess I'm looking from a modern perspective. Great overall and would strongly recommend, as long as you have a lot of time to spare.

Interesting Book

I really enjoyed the early chapters and the interaction between the two families when Dido, Harry and Tom were young children. I struggled with the second half of the book which I found less interesting and a bit predictable in places. I found the reader to be very good, giving different voices for each character.

Samuel Pepys was 26 when he decided to start keeping a diary, in January 1660. For the next 10 years he faithfully recorded the day's events and confessed his innermost thoughts. That diary has since become one of our most important, and fascinating, historical documents. Pepys gave us eyewitness accounts of some of the great events of the 17th century, including the Great Fire of London and the Second Dutch War.

This was a good holiday listen that did not demand too much from me. None of the characters were very likeable and I agree with other reviewers that the ending seemed a little rushed. However, all in all I enjoyed it and I've given 5 stars because it kept my interest and I it hooked me in until the end.

Story
Imagine you could travel back to the 14th century. What would you see? What would you smell? More to the point, where are you going to stay? And what are you going to eat? Ian Mortimer shows us that the past is not just something to be studied; it is also something to be lived. He sets out to explain what life was like in the most immediate way, through taking you to the Middle Ages. The result is the most astonishing social history book you are ever likely to read: evolutionary in its concept, informative and entertaining in its detail.
