Story
In "Strange Highways," a floundering alcoholic gets a mysterious second chance to relive the night his life began its downward spiral 20 years ago. But on this dark journey, he’ll be supremely tested by conflict with his successful, charismatic older brother, his loss of faith, and the clash between good and the ultimate evil. Sink into this binge-worthy collection of beloved Koontz short stories, featuring denizens of hell, vengeful children, and eerily human-like robots that will send shivers down your spine.

Very poor sound quality.
Reviewed: 19-12-24
I read this collection of stories years ago and I’ve already bought and listened to the audible version of ‘Strange Highways’, which is the best of this collection. The other stories are a bit of a mixed bag; some are engaging and some I just wanted to fast forward but I didn’t. Likewise, some of the narrators were ok and some were barely tolerable, although the poor sound quality didn’t help. I won’t be listening to this collection again. Maybe I’ve just moved on and my taste has changed.

Story
This isn't the first time Lucas Fergus has woken up next to the bins outside a bar, but it is the first time he's done so with no memory of the days before. Something bad has happened, but he has no idea what. And things keep getting worse. With a sudden and unexpected change coming over him, Lucas finds himself trapped inside an old english pub with a group of people he doesn't much like. But messing with Lucas is a bad idea, for there is more to him than meets the eye. Soon there will be Hell to pay.

I enjoyed this book and I’ve got used to Aubrey Parsons’ narration but please, please stop making the Irish Lucas sound like a genial leprechaun! The characters are, in the main, likeable and well developed and I’m expecting others to be added as the series progresses. I thought ‘The Spread: The Complete Infection’ was outstanding and I’m hoping that this will be as good… if there are more to come.

Industrial Lancashire, 1974. The kids in the coal-mining town of Ashburn love the waning of the year. But, this particular autumn will be memorable for entirely different reasons. Because this year someone is killing the children of Ashburn. Or should that be something? While police and parents search for a maniac, Stephen Carter and his schoolmates know better. They may be on the cusp of adulthood, but there’s still enough of the youngster left in each of them to recognize the work of an evil supernatural unique to these deserts of slag heap and coal tip....

14 is on my list of all time favourite books, unlike this one. Every time I heard the words, ‘I don’t know what that means’, I wanted to scream. There are elements that remind me of Stephen King’s ‘The Institute’ and Greg Hurwitz’s Orphan X series but this required a bit too much suspended belief for me. Not his best.

Story
An eighty-year-old man is found murdered in his home. His age and standing in the community makes finding his killer difficult–why would anyone harm an elderly man? What threat could he possibly be to anyone? With no apparent motive, DS George Cross canvases the community for potential suspects but the man was known as generous, charitable, community-minded. Each interview about who the man is muddies the picture further. So Cross decides to look for who he was–revealing a past that is far less honourable than his present . . .

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Tim Sullivan’s development of the main characters throughout the series makes them come alive, especially George whose neurodivergent behaviour and comments make me laugh out loud at times. I’ve become very fond of his oblivious innocence. I was irritated by Findlay Robertson’s narration; his mispronunciation of common words, such as ‘burgalry’ instead of ‘burglary’ really grates. His pauses part way through a sentence led me listen at 1.1 speed, which was a definite improvement.
Story wise, I guessed the culprit fairly early on but was never quite sure until the end. There are lots of twists and turns and I definitely recommend this book. When’s the next one due?

Story
'You like it darker? Fine, so do I', writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life - both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to listen to.

I’ve been a Stephen King fan for nigh on 50 years but I think the quality of his short stories/novellas has become very hit and miss. I enjoyed the longer stories in this collection but struggled to see the point in some of the shorter ones. Unlike many of his novels and older short story collections, this is not a book that I’ll revisit.

This was my first Jess Kidd story. I have 2 other books in my library but it’ll be a long time before I try one of them. I found it very difficult to relate to the characters and didn’t particularly care what happened to them; I just wanted it to end. Still, it’s a case of ‘each to their own’ and the world would a very poor place if we all liked the same thing.

The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

I enjoyed the story, even though it was more than a little implausible. Leif’s continual risk avoidance became irritating but not as irritating as the characterisation of his voice, which made him sound like a whiny pre teen. Worse still was the voice of Janine’s grandmother who sounded like she’d overdosed on helium.
