Story
When 14-year-old Zoe Johnson doesn't come home on a Monday night in early December, the alarm bells in Kings Lake Central police station do not ring straight away - after all, she's from the Dockmills, one of the toughest estates in the town. But for Detective Sergeant DC Smith, due to retire in just three weeks' time, there are some strange echoes of the case that has haunted him for the past 13 years. Maybe it's simply his over-developed sense of irony, or maybe, in his final days as a police officer, Smith must look once more into the eyes of a serial killer.

Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

JD & Hoon at their finest

Must admit I am slightly in love with Bob Hoon, who never fails to disappoint in his cantankerous, arrogant, witty Scottishness . All wrapped up in some fine detective work .JDKirk incorporates a tiny percentage of every detective, soldier, SAS man, and nice gentleman that I have known!

Just beautiful in every way

I became quickly enthralled with the story after overcoming a slight irritation at the overly think French accent. As a Francophile it grew on me but aware it could be off putting.
I loved Barbara’s graphic story telling, easily able to visualise each scene in France & America. The wisdom of life shines through as emotions are created, developed & soothed. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Great writer & story poor oration

I love Rosie’s story telling - but so disappointed with this production by Polly. Surely she must’ve read the earlier books where we learned to know the characters & their voices. Sally’s voice particularly grating - from solid working class to cut glass accent from one book to the next. I will have to read rest of series rather than listen. So sorry.
