A fictional true crime podcast starring BAFTA Award winner Sheridan Smith (Mrs Biggs, Cilla) and Golden Globe winner Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey), THE MARGATE MURDERS follows the hunt for an elusive serial killer who murders once every decade, and then changes his identity. In a story full of shocking twists and turns, a journalist, a survivor, a witness, a detective and a forensic psychologist are all interviewed for their perspective on the what went right, and what went horribly wrong, in the hunt for a killer. But everyone has their own agenda, and maybe even something to hide…

Excellent
Reviewed: 07-10-24
Presented in the style of a true-crime documentary, this was probably one of the most convincing performances I've ever heard. It can be difficult to make an acted, scripted piece sound like a genuine podcast, because it's hard to get actors to have the naturalistic tone of real interviewees, but this managed it so well, that if Sheridan Smith's voice wasn't so recognisable, I might have mistaken it for the real thing!

Story
Outside the island there is nothing: the world destroyed by a fog that swept the planet, killing anyone it touched. On the island: it is idyllic. 122 villagers and 3 scientists, living in peaceful harmony. The villagers are content to fish, farm and feast, to obey their nightly curfew, to do what they’re told by the scientists. Until, to the horror of the islanders, one of their beloved scientists is found brutally stabbed to death. And they learn the murder has triggered a lowering of the security system around the island, the only thing that was keeping the fog at bay.

I snapped this up after reading the blurb, as it sounded exactly my cup of tea. It was just that; a post apocalyptic murder mystery on an island. Adjoa Andoh was fantastic as always. I wish she could read all my audiobooks. She always has such distinct voices for each character, that it is easy to keep track of who's speaking, plus giving extra depth to the characters. The murder mystery part was a little too convoluted at times and I found it a bit difficult to keep track of who did what and when, but there were some well-paced reveals of the island's mysteries along the way, all rounded off with a very satisfying conclusion. I wish Audible had included a pdf of the map that Stuart mentioned in the acknowledgements, partly because it would just be nice to see, but also might have helped keep better track of events.

Story
Parents Angelina and Ben exist in enviable luxury: not just wealth, success and a gorgeous home, but a loving relationship and beautiful twin babies to complete the perfect family. But having it all means that you have the most to lose. And when cracks begin to appear things fall apart at a shocking pace; and it's twins Max and Mia who suffer the most. Money isn't enough to paper over the problems in this extraordinary and heartbreaking story. It is a foster-caring experience like no other, and one which tests Louise's emotional strength to the core.

Uncomfortable listen
Reviewed: 05-10-23
I have to agree with reviewer Leo, that the way the social worker Bea was judged and mocked by Louise made this uncomfortable to listen to. Louise takes against her from the first moment of setting eyes on her, based purely on appearances, and even mocks her for asking to be called Bea (her full name is Beatrice) So petty and vindictive. While there may be just cause to critique her competence as a social worker later on, and it certainly seems she was at the very least incompetent, if not possibly malicious, the personal and petty attacks from Louise (in the book, not to the woman's face) were uncalled for and felt very unprofessional, for all that Louise goes on about wanting foster carers to be considered professionals.

I listen to quite a lot in this genre, and I'm often left dissatisfied with over-the-top plots and cartoon villains. This was carefully crafted, with well drawn characters, plenty of intrigue and suspense, good twists, a believable police investigation, and a satisfying ending. Highly recommended.

Bree’s new home is luxurious and private, with a fancy Beverly Hills address. What a shame it’s not hers. Widowed, penniless, living in her car, and out of options, she’s climbed the fence and crashed in the pool house. All she wants is a good night’s sleep. But when Sophie, the absentee owner, finds her, she gets a whole lot more.

This was an easy listen, with likeable characters and good pacing; no dull moments. There were a few entertaining twists along the way. It was told from four different points of view, which worked well, and the narrators all did a great job. Recommended for when you need something diverting but not taxing.

Ida Pederson was an executive at ‘Nyberg Shoreline’ when she was sent to the small Northern Irish village of Port Kriel to diffuse tensions between the company and the local community. When an unexploded bomb was identified on the seabed near Nyberg’s windfarm, Ida sent a local crew of eight men to investigate. That night, only two men returned home, barely alive and unable to speak of what had happened out at sea.

Reviewed: 03-05-23
I love audio dramas, especially Sci-fi ones and having Rakie Ayola in it, who I know from Doctor Who (both tv and audio) was a bonus. This was also the right sort of length that I enjoy, because the writers have to be concise in getting their story across, so it's a good pace throughout. I'd love more like this.

Story
Thaisa Frank works with what the New York Times has called "a tantalizing sense of indirection," in this short work of surrealistic fiction, as she writes about a couple who begin to spin the most mundane topics into fantastical bedtime stories for one another. Their narratives reveal what neither will say to each other directly and end in a surprising admission of truth.

Wrong blurb!
Reviewed: 07-09-22
The blurb for this story has been mixed up with another from Thaisa Frank called Stories We Began To Tell. I was therefore confused for most of it, which is not the author's fault, but having worked out the mix up, I still don't feel I understand the point of the story. It would be fine as the opening of a novel, but as a short story, it is lacking. I can't comment on the other short story, for which this has the blurb, as it is only 8 minutes long, but costs a credit!

I enjoyed this a lot. It was easy to listen to, mostly light-hearted and moved along at a good pace with a happy ending. The narrator was very good. I only gave it four stars, because although time travel is one of my favourite genres, it was nothing ground-breaking in this regard, but definitely deserves more recognition on Audible. I usually have a few books on the go at once for different moods and this was great for bedtime when I usually want something light and cosy. Definitely worth a listen when you need cheering up.
