Story
DCI Evan Warlow believes that murder is a cardinal sin. Even when the victim is a drug dealing, money-laundering criminal. But when a police officer is shot in the same incident at a tranquil beach near Tenby in South Pembrokeshire… Suddenly it’s personal. What appears, on the surface, to be a falling out between partners in crime soon spirals into an operation involving gang warfare and a great deal of money. But even Warlow is not prepared for what lurks beneath the surface of this most terrible of crimes.

Mixed opinion, some good but not all

Slow start with some bits really irrelevant. Improved a bit but should have ended 50 minutes before it did rather than trying to scene set for the next book. Glad it was free as, though ok, is not one for me.

Good detective story with many a twist but no unnecessary violence or bad language.
Reviewed: 07-02-24
A good traditional detective story with twist and turns. Just when you think you have solved it there is another twist. A great read and a good author who does not need to include unnecessary violence, bad language or sex scenes. A rarity from so many modern authors who seem unable to write a gripping story without . Well done and cant wait to start the second book in the series.

Some accents were not Yorkshire. I kept slipping between Liverpool, Australia and elsewhere but never North Yorkshire.

A year has passed since LAPD detective Renée Ballard quit the force in the face of misogyny, demoralization and endless red tape. Yet, after the chief of police himself tells her she can write her ticket within the department, Ballard takes back her badge, leaving 'the Late Show' to rebuild the cold case unit at the elite Robbery-Homicide Division. For years, Harry Bosch has been working a case that haunts him but that he hasn't been able to crack—the murder of an entire family by a psychopath who still walks free. Ballard makes Bosch an offer.

A burglary, a murder and a killer who wears a mask. A woman is found dead in her bed, badly beaten. Precious items are missing from the house, including a Fender Stratocaster guitar belonging to her husband. Was it just a burglary gone wrong? Perhaps it is not a motive DI Stewart Gardener should be looking for, but a pattern. And he needs to get to the bottom of the mystery fast, before someone else is hurt.

Good but needless violence and no real conclusion
Reviewed: 26-02-22
Well read but the storyline poor. Using real place names but getting geography wrong shows lack of research. Too much unnecessary violence in detail yet ending incomplete. Like he was writing. 300 page novel and realised he had only 5 pages left. Take out the needless violence and end it properly and it would be a good story.
