This is a perfect introduction to what is such a dauntingly huge area. It is full of fascinating information while maintaining a really strong narrative line. It gives one the courage to go to the sorce works with some confidence, which is exactly what i was hoping for.

No one expresses yearning so infectiously as Turgenev i believe, and David Troughton does him justice which an amazing achievement. It feels as though one’s whole life is passing in review with its bitter sweetness.

The history of Ireland is presented with the intensity and drama it so richly deserves. Having been educated in Dublin in the 1970s, all the key points carried an echo for me, but in respect of making the history human and indelible this audiobook has done more than all those classes. One of its unique features is that it gives more of an Ulster perspective. The author sadly died this April. So my only regret about the book — that it stops in 1939 — cannot be rectified.

There are some brilliant virtuosic pieces of writing here, such as about gloves and about how impossible it is to “reason” with adolescents, not to mention the overall epic theme. However I think the quality is undercut by Roth’s long-windedness unfortunately. I would recommend the book to anyone interested in modern American but more asa book to skim through. The acting voice over is as good as it could be.

Thackeray's command of language amazing, narrator superb but something shallow about this satire. yes it's satirizing shallowness, but from what vantage point?
