Lovely little jaunt to St Mary’s and Rome.
Good tie in for the series and the spin-off Time Police first full story.

Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. Superb continuation of the beautiful Rising saga
Reviewed: 25-08-23
Genuinely surprised and enthralled throughout this next chapter in the Rising world. Brown continues to push and expand on these characters and allowing what he has built over many books to continue to breath and grow in unexpected ways. Would say this isn’t entry level, this needs the history from the previous books so would thoroughly recommend getting these under your belt before this one. TGR beautiful brings the characters to life and elevates the text.

If you like the universe give this a listen
Reviewed: 25-08-23
Not the best addition to the recent novels in the Firefly universe but enjoyable all the same. A few deviations for the crew characters or leaning to heavily into their foibles. It’s always nice though to spend a bit of time in the universe and a new story. Performances split due to the way this one is written, but JAF nailing it as always.

Story
For someone who didn't intend to wreck the solar system's fragile balance of power, Jim Holden did a pretty good job of it.While Earth and Mars have stopped shooting each other, the core alliance is shattered. The outer planets and the Belt are uncertain in their new - possibly temporary - autonomy. Then, on one of Jupiter's moons, a single super-soldier attacks, slaughtering soldiers of Earth and Mars indiscriminately and reigniting the war.

Humanity has colonized the planets - interstellar travel is still beyond our reach, but the solar system has become a dense network of colonies. But there are tensions - the mineral-rich outer planets resent their dependence on Earth and Mars and the political and military clout they wield over the Belt and beyond. Now, when Captain Jim Holden's ice miner stumbles across a derelict, abandoned ship, he uncovers a secret that threatens to throw the entire system into war.

Wonderfully crafted beginning

This has been a book on my list for a long time and I’m delighted I’ve finally stepped into this world. The realism of the world building is a testament to the writer. You feel every part of the space faring, you live every part of the battles. It does not travel down the traditional and it gives voice to all characters without drowning out the protagonists. Performance by Mays is again outstanding, subtle and without impingement on the narrative. I wholeheartedly recommend this listen. Looking forward to the next book.

Story
An AI overseer and a human crew arrive on a distant planet to salvage an ancient UN starship. The overseer is unhappy. The crew, well, they're certainly no A-team. Not even a C-team on the best of days. And worse? Urmahon Beta, the planet, is at the ass-end of nowhere. Everybody expects this to be a long, ugly, and thankless job. Then it all goes disastrously wrong. What they thought was an uninhabited backwater turns out to be anything but empty.
