Story
Germany, 1945: a country in ruins. Cities have been reduced to rubble and more than half of the population are where they do not belong or do not want to be. How can a functioning society ever emerge from this chaos? In bombed-out Berlin, Ruth Andreas-Friedrich, journalist and member of the Nazi resistance, warms herself by a makeshift stove and records in her diary how a frenzy of expectation and industriousness grips the city.

It Covers Everything
Reviewed: 08-05-24
The author has examined every conceivable aspect of postwar Germany. He covers the struggle to create something from the collapsed structures, both physical and metaphorical. Reconstruction, repression and suppression of the past. The author examines aspects of the econo.y, and culture, whether in architecture, furniture, or domestic lifestyle. He looks at the re-education of a society through the arts, and the CIA as propaganda patrons. The book is of inestimable importance, holding a microscopic vision of a society that arose from a 12 year criminal enterprise to be reconstructed as a free society, inspite of the rehabilitation of so many Nazis in senior positions.

An urgent and deeply necessary book, Israelophobia will explore how - in the words of Howard Jacobson - prejudice against Israel is 'old hatred decanted into new bottles'. By coining a new term, 'Israelophobia', it will cut through arguments about where criticism of Israel ends and antisemitism begins, allowing for robust debate while exposing dangerous, hate-fuelled rhetoric.

it is probable that very few people who are not Jews or Israelis will care to read this book. The strongest part of the book for me is the antisemitic ideologies running through Hajj Amin al- Husseini, the Nazis, the founders of the Moslem Brotherhood, the Soviets through to Abbas and the present represented by Al Queida, iS, and Hamas. The author proves the connection between antisemitism and anti-Zionism and its pathology. It is sad that those who are so hostile to to Israel, and the Jews will not care to read this book. Unfortunately, the book is "preaching to the converted".

Story
Between 1917 and 1921, a devastating struggle took place in Russia following the collapse of the Tsarist empire. Many regard this savage civil war as the most influential event of the modern era. An incompatible White alliance of moderate socialists and reactionary monarchists stood little chance against Trotsky's Red Army and Lenin's single-minded Communist dictatorship. Terror begat terror, which in turn led to even greater cruelty with man's inhumanity to man, woman and child.

The Hidden World War between World Wars
Reviewed: 30-09-22
Through the excellent narration , Beevor has taken on a massive task to paint such a huge canvas. He has attempted to provide the detailed movements of all of the participants , not only the Red and White Russians, not only the Cossacks but the presence of the British American, French, the nascent Czechs, Poles, and surprisingly the Chinese. He has combined the details of the movements of all the participants with the memoirs and letters of those who witnessed the human earthquake. The narration was excellent. I would have needed a map to grasp the geographical enormity of the conflicts.

Humanity contra the darkness as is found in all of the books. The performance suits the philosophy of the authors. His gentle voice portrays the kindness and concern of the main characters, and retains a tension in describing the swift action and violence of the plot.

So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. The Red Army had much to avenge when it finally reached the frontiers of the Reich in January 1945. Political instructors rammed home the message of Wehrmacht and SS brutality. The result was the most terrifying example of fire and sword ever known, with tanks crushing refugee columns under their tracks, mass rape, pillage and destruction. Over seven million fled westwards from the terror of the Red Army. Antony Beevor reconstructs the experiences of those millions caught up in the nightmare of the Third Reich's final collapse.

Story
The Dreyfus Affair: The History and Legacy of France’s Most Notorious Antisemitic Political Scandal examines the chain of events that produced one of the most notorious episodes in modern French history. A case was built with the central objective of protecting the integrity of French military establishment, and in the process, the relatively muted anti-Semitism in France (at least in comparison to other European nations) was transformed into an era of virulent and violent Jew-hatred that characterized and sullied the final decade of the 19th century in France.

it is a well known story in general. The book provides flesh to the bare bones. The author wishes to clarify some of the underlying tensions between authoritarianism and liberality in French society with the 'outsider', Jew in the French military.

Reading Kepler's stories in chronological order, this has been the best read yet. The plot is a roller coaster of horror. The characterisation is finely observed, reminiscent of Simenon's psychological portraits.
I look forward to the next one.
