Story
Three very different women are recruited to the mysterious Bletchley Park, where the best minds in Britain train to break German military codes. Vivacious debutante Osla has the dashing Prince Philip of Greece sending her roses - but she burns to prove herself as more than a society girl, working to translate decoded enemy secrets. Self-made Mab masters the legendary codebreaking machines as she conceals old wounds and the poverty of her East-End London upbringing. And shy local girl Beth is the outsider who trains as one of the Park’s few female cryptanalysts.

Gripping story
Reviewed: 24-11-24
Great characters and fascinating story.
Such a shame it was spoiled by grating pronunciation of English words and places. As a Coventrian, born and bred I found the constant referral to Cuventry very irritating. The bombing of Coventry during the war is well known so should have been researched better by the narrator. Similarly with other words as previous reviews have mentioned. It would have been easy to edit these surely?
It did spoil an otherwise great listen.

As many others have said, listening to Christine Lakin narrating was difficult. Such a strange and unnatural way of talking was grating and ruined the whole thing. The contrast with Titus Welliver’s clear and appropriate narration was huge.
Put me off other books with the same female narrator. Have almost forgotten the story because of the pain of listening. What a shame.

Brilliant narration of a wonderful story
Reviewed: 10-02-20
I read all the Harry Potter books when they came out - as an adult - and thoroughly enjoyed them. I’ve also seen all the films - on tv, several times, over the years and loved those too. So I wasn’t at all sure I would be captivated by this first audiobook. But Stephen Fry’s narration deserves 10 stars - he is a wonderful and talented story teller who brings all the characters to life. I was totally engrossed from start to finish and now plan to listen to the whole series.
Thank you Audible and especially Stephen Fry!

Exploring our death rituals - and those of other cultures - she pleads the case for healthier attitudes around death and dying.

Soon to be a major TV series starring Kenneth Branagh. On 21 June 1922, Count Alexander Rostov - recipient of the Order of Saint Andrew, member of the Jockey Club, Master of the Hunt - is escorted out of the Kremlin, across Red Square and through the elegant revolving doors of the Hotel Metropol. Story
"I write this sitting at the kitchen sink" is the first line of a novel about love, sibling rivalry, and a bohemian existence in a crumbling castle in the middle of nowhere. Cassandra Mortmin's journal records her fadingly glamorous stepmother, her beautiful, wistful older sister, and the man to whom they owe both their isolation and poverty: Father. The author of one experimental novel, and a minor cause celebre, he has since suffered from writer's block and is determined to drag his family down with him.

I enjoyed this book more and more as it progressed. The characters are interesting and the descriptions amusing yet affectionate. It was like being transported to another era and was sad and poignant as well as entertaining. Well worth a listen. I enjoyed Jenny Agutter’s narration although I do agree that a younger narrator may have been more appropriate given the age of the character. But a versatile and compelling narration. I was sorry when it ended - what more can you say of a good book?
