I found these stories well presented by the actors but I just did not know what was going on. I found it really difficult to follow and as soon as something made sense, it ended! I think these stories would be better read, or at least with a narrator. Pity because I love a good mystery story but this was just too mysterious to follow 😵💫

I love Elly Griffith’s books anyway, especially Ruth and Nelson. This wonderful collection of stories was sublime. Just the right length, and some of her well known characters too, as well as stand alone tales. I did not want it to end. Masterful writing. I really hope we have not heard the last of Ruth Galloway though

For the first part of this book, I was fearful that yet more of the team and families would be murdered and it would be yet another harrowing story, although just as good as previous ones. Spoiler: luckily, it was not and the ending of AA was just brilliant although I had worked out who was the “goodie” but not the extra twist. I hope there are more tales to come

I love to listen to him. I was also impressed with the level of WW1 research. I have stopped listening to so many stories from that era because of bad research, so well done Mary P-E!

I have loved the Rebus books from the very beginning but I think now is an appropriate time to end them. Rankin has left the door open but only ajar. I felt the story was a bit tired, but expertly crafted as usual. Would like to see a Siobhan story next!

I don't know why I listened to the end. I guess I thought it would get better, and I do enjoy a supernatural tale. But this was so convoluted, I just could not keep up. I wanted to slap the main character, she was so stupid! I bought this book because I listened to the author on "History Hit" and she sounded as though the book would be well written - but it was not. Sorry Alma, it was just drivel! And not that well researched when it comes to WW1 nurses - or how many were actually on the Britannic......

I had listened to the first book in this series but none since but the story summary intrigued me. At first, i was about to abandon it. The first couple of chapters were full of woe! But then the story started to unfold and I was hooked. So many twists and turns! I enjoy these kind of novels - half in the past and half present. The only criticism I have is the ending. I felt there were too many open ends. There was I waiting for explanations of some of the storylines but there was none! Could have been a whole new chapter just to explain! And although David Monteath is excellent at the different characters and voices (except he cannot do a welsh accent), he moved on to next chapters and the next scenario with no natural gap, hence sometimes I did wonder whether we were in 2019 or 1945. A little bit of a breather in between please, David!

Disappointed
Reviewed: 17-11-19
I was really looking forward to this new release but have ended up being really disappointed. The plot appeared to be really interesting at first but then the author brought in a storyline for one of the main characters which just did not ring true ( spoilers: in this day and age I cannot imagine the protagonist in a dispute with a co-worker being brought back to the same workplace when there must be so many other places to go.....Is there only one station in Lincolnshire?) Once a big plot hole emerges, then I find it hard to listen anymore, and the whole book just seemed to be doom and gloom, so I only got as far as a couple of hours in. Pity, because Richard Armitage is a marvellous narrator and did not disappoint. Perhaps it is just me......
