A rollercoaster of a book!
Reviewed: 07-03-25
I love John’s books and couldn’t wait to listen to this one!I wasn’t disappointed. I binged it all in one day, just couldn’t stop listening to it. However, for the first few chapters I wasn’t quite sure if I was going to like the book. It is rather convoluted and a bit confusing and I had no idea what was going on. If you feel this like this, persevere! It all becomes clear and you will be in for a cracking rollercoaster of a read. Twists and turns a plenty, some I predicted, but many I did not! Well done John, this is one of your best!

Utterly unbelievable
Reviewed: 02-03-25
Oh dear of dear, this book just goes from bad, to terrible to horrendously awful. It tries too hard to be twisty and suspenseful and instead of being a tense page turner, falls flat on its face. It is painfully unbelievable, confusing and downright silly. The narration was good but it is the worst thing I have listened to in quite some time. I absolutely would not recommend.

Implausible story
Reviewed: 21-01-25
My first book by this author, and I enjoyed the first 3/4 of it. I felt it was well written and I like the twists and turns which kept me listening. I was expecting to give this review 4 or 5 stars but it all went a bit silly. The motives for the murder(s) were weak and implausible and I felt, increasingly, as we reached the finale, that the book just got sillier and sillier. I would try another book by Valerie Keogh hoping for a more believable one.

Loved this book very much. I wasn’t sure I would like the podcast type of production, and for the first 15 minutes I was less than sure it was for me. I did however stick with it and it just kept getting better and better. My advice however is to start listening to it when you have lots of time to devote to it. I seriously couldn’t put it down…. It is compulsive listening for sure. Loved everything about it. The narration is superb and everyone involved did a stellar job. The only thing I found grating was the summary at the start of each chapter, I know why it was done but it was annoying and I skipped through it each time. In summary this is a superb novel. Very well written with lots of twists and turns and suspense..I would recommend it, most definitely. One of the best novels I have listened to this year.

Was expecting more
Reviewed: 14-12-24
After reading the reviews I was expecting a lot more from this book, the long anticipated ‘twist’ was more of a slight wiggle, I saw if coming a mile off. I thought the book was poorly written and very very slow going. Would have been ok as a concept for a short story but needed too much padding to turn it into a novel. Wouldn’t recommend and won’t be reading any other books by this author.

Not for me, sadly
Reviewed: 20-11-24
I have enjoyed Emma’s previous two books but this one I just couldn’t get into. I found myself not wanting to listen as I just found it boring and too drawn out. I needed more to keep me hooked and for it to move faster. I listened to 5 hours of it, but very little had happened. Bus driver trying to track down a girl he thinks resembles someone he killed. After 5 hours this is still the case. He is no closer to finding answers and neither was I. Gave up, sadly, as I had loved her first two books. I would try another, especially is they are narrated by Robin Laing , who I adore. Sadly a bit of a damp squib for me.

Wow this book was boring. Just went on and on, forever, repeating itself over and over. The plot is frankly idiotic and the. twist, such that it was, was so predictable it almost had flashing lights and horns! No one in the book was likeable, no one who read this book could be expected to believe a single word of the most contrived and unbelievable plot ever, and no one ( if they have any sense) should persevere with this ridiculous nonsense. A complete clanger of a book. Done with Sarah Denzil now, no more..

Have you ever wanted to be someone else? Vanessa has always found it easy to pretend to be somebody different, somebody better. When things get tough in her real life, all she has to do is throw on some nicer clothes, adopt a new accent and she can escape. That's how it started: looking round houses she couldn't possibly afford. Harmless fun really. Until it wasn't. Because a man who lived in one of those houses is dead. And everyone thinks Vanessa killed him.

Don’t waste your time listening to this confusing, badly researched pile of nonsense. Wish I hadn’t. It flits about all over the place making it very difficult to follow, and the plot is simply ludicrous and full of gigantic holes. Makes absolutely no sense. I kept listening hoping it would improve but it just didn’t. A very unsatisfying and unrewarding book. My first, and last, by this author. Never ever again.
