Story
Anatoli Boukreev’s first-hand account of the worst human disaster in the history of Mt. Everest will hold listeners spellbound. A top-rated guide and high altitude climber, Boukreev dictated the raw and powerful details of this ill-fated trek from memories and notes recorded just five days after the catastrophe. In May of 1996, 33 people went up the mountain, but only 28 returned. As two commercial expeditions climbed the world’s highest peak, poor planning, miscommunication, and an unpredictable blizzard conspired to defeat them.

The perfect marriage? Or the perfect lie? Jack has looks and wealth; Grace has charm and elegance. You might not want to like them, but you do. You'd like to get to know Grace better. But it's difficult, because Jack and Grace are never apart. Some might call this true love. Others might ask why Grace never answers the phone. And why there are bars on one of the bedroom windows. Sometimes the perfect marriage is the perfect lie.

From our funniest writer, a portrait of our most talked-about royal. She made John Lennon blush and Marlon Brando clam up. She cold-shouldered Princess Diana and humiliated Elizabeth Taylor. Andy Warhol photographed her. Jack Nicholson offered her cocaine. Gore Vidal revered her. John Fowles hoped to keep her as his sex slave. Dudley Moore propositioned her. Francis Bacon heckled her. Peter Sellers was in love with her. For Pablo Picasso, she was the object of sexual fantasy.

This book needs a haircut
Reviewed: 15-07-24
Disclaimer . I could only force myself to complete chapter 11 . The writing and narration are really stiff. I understand we’re talking about royalty here but it also makes what could be really interesting storytelling deadly dull.
This book needs a severe haircut as tiny incidents are chewed over and repeated and described in slightly different ways over and over again for no good reason .
I currently can’t return this book, but I cannot bring myself to continue with it.
If there’s a positive that came out of this experience, it’s an appreciation for editors!

Story
In ancient Rome, all the best stories have one thing in common - murder. In one 50-year period, 26 emperors were murdered. But what did killing mean in a city where gladiators fought to the death to sate a crowd? In A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Emma Southon examines a trove of real-life homicides from Roman history to explore Roman culture, including how perpetrator, victim, and the act itself were regarded by ordinary people. Inside ancient Rome’s darkly fascinating history, we see how the Romans viewed life and death and what it means to be human.

Brilliant storytelling animation. Love the way the author dropped in modern day references without distracting from the narrative this book made me laugh out loud And clutch my pearls, but it really bought to life the reality of Rome and what it may have been like to live under Roman rule.
Pick this book out on a whim and I listen to it in one sitting could not turn it off. Fantastic book thoroughly enjoyed it more please. Please keep the same narrator as she was fantastic.

A knot in my stomach ! ❤️
Reviewed: 19-04-23
Wish I’d had a book like this to read 30 years ago…..
(not so sure I would have listened)🫣
I saw all those headlines and salacious stories. Then I saw a series of candid interviews with Mel, her mom and her one of her daughter’s ( what a team). I KNEW I needed to listen to this book because i KNEW there was something in Brutally Honest I needed to hear. Some unvarnished truth about patterns of behaviour run and repeated in my life.
I bought this audiobook a week ago then sat on it for 5 days 😄too afraid to open Pandora’s box knowing once opened I couldn’t un-know or un-see. Then 2 days ago I made myself press play and really listen, and as hard to hear (as some of it was) and beautifully touching and funny too I finished it at midnight last night.
This is probably one of the most important books I have read/ listened to in the last 2 years and has stopped me in my tracks!
By sharing her “Brutally Honest” experience set in the context of family, her black and white heritage with all the strength, challenges, love, laughs and texture that beings, her relationship with her father, just being plain feisty 🔥and for much of her journey (so far) being an “X” in a room full of “O’s”. I’ve seen parts of my life reflected in someone else’s lived experience, can’t tell you how powerful that is.
At times, this not an easy listen, it’s not meant to be. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being brutally honest and sharing your experience in the way that you have. I need to sit with this new perspective and use it to begin living my life,my way.
If I had one wish for you it is this. If you have picked this book up online or pulled it off the shelf in a bookstore or library then quickly put it back AND you got a knot in your stomach or a massive lump in your throat so big you couldn’t swallow……you already know you need to listen/read this book. Do yourself a solid and listen.
Thank you Melanie Browne. To borrow a phrase from Jamie Catto, thank you for being “a walking permission slip” for someone like me to begin to learn, embrace, love and be unapologetically all me.💪🏾
