Story
Hello there. Welcome to my autobiography. Throughout this audiobook I talk about my life and work, including Little Britain, Come Fly with Me, Bridesmaids, Les Miserables, Alice in Wonderland and, of course, Shooting Stars. The thing is, this is a bit different to most memoirs you may have listened to, because it comes in the form of an A-Z. Anyway, I hope you buy it at least twice. Thank you.

I thought I was a Matt Lucas fan just because I've always known of and liked him, but from reading this I came to realise that I don't actually watch his stuff!
That doesn't matter though, it's a great wee book.
So I'm a fan of him, turns out not so much his comic work. I've seen dozens of stand up comedians but as a painfully introverted sort if I needed to pee during his show I'd have to sprint out and never come back.
I loved him in Alice (though not so much the general story), I love him in bake off, and Dr Who, and I just really like Matt Lucas. I haven't seen Little Britain properly, never really liked that comic style, I've only seen the odd sketch and only find the pool shelf and the tree / "Ah fell" funny.
But again, that doesn't matter. I just really like Matt Lucas, and not knowing the bulk of his portfolio didn't affect this book.
He's a sound lad, charismatic, I greatly respect keeping his lovely but tragic relationship off the table, very poignantly done. Otherwise it was very human and fairly honest, no excuses made for his rat behaviour growing up / as a young man, though it feels a lot more was held back or his feelings glossed over with comic distraction. Actually, it feels like since he's not the type to hold a grudge, he's forgotten the extent of past pains and tells them with too much comic relief. Hard to describe. But I was left feeling like I need to have a conversation in person to get what he's saying / understand how he's feeling.
I really do wish him every happiness.
Really enjoyed that. Cheers, Lucas

Story
It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

I loved everything. One of my favourite stories but usually leaves me speechless and disillusioned for a minimum of 72 hours after reading, as well as for the entirety of the time spent reading.
It's so much lighter and more accessible, but maintaining the integrity of the novel - this is a WONDERFUL companion to an incredible book.
Andrew Garfield gave a different kindness and softer edge to Winston, being younger was a very interesting edit that I actually really enjoyed
Andrew Scott - he's a marvel in himself, deliciously menacing and born to be O'Brien
THE MUSIC
The soundscape was just a dream. A BRILLIANT production. Cast and crew, take a bow and PLEASE do another one immediately

I'm trying so hard not to be too harsh here. Spoilers ahead
There's a good story in here, but it reads like a throwaway trash novel, so I don't understand what it actually is. The second hand embarrassment in the second half was astounding. Using gnarly shakespearean quotes to give an edge to our "heroine"? Some scenes were stolen directly from fight club, others directly from trainspotting. Neither in a way that worked.
Then other scenes were terrific. Erin on her first day at work was class. Tobias was one of the most poorly written characters I've ever seen, and he should have been the most interesting because he's the only one who seems to have any capacity for thought. Silas is just a pathetic narcissist, Erin is watery and in her own words, empty, and Amara should have had more sense than be friends with such losers
In saying that, I couldn't stop. I fully rage read the last third but I still tore through it. So it had me hooked, just not for reasons I typically have for consuming a book

Spoilers; kind of. It definitely spoiled the book
I felt the rape scenes were too detailed and frequent, I was listening in the car on a really hot day and a poor passerby was witness to a very unfortunate term involving the sense of smell and the female anatomy
Got to the point where every scene William was in and any woman was within a mile of him I could potentially hear seedy music start to play and I just thought "yes Ken I understand he's a very naughty boy I don't need to know any more details of his... oh okay you're going again. Great"
It totally spoiled the book. I persevered cause I figured the next one is set in 200 years so half these rapists are bound to die and I want to be there for that. By that time I didn't care anymore because I was exhausted by both the vulgarity of the violence, and the language. I'm an avid horror fan with a high tolerance for violence but this was just bewildering. I'd love to read the 500 page version where William just rapes once, which really is all we need to set the tone

I have a physical copy on the way
this is the first time I forced myself not to be greedy. I made it last, which is saying something considering the length. there's so many characters and some with more than one name I found myself pausing often to gather my thoughts or going back to the beginning of the chapter.
it's special. this is my favourite book. I've never been as sure of my favourite. this is it.
I'm so grateful I put this on. I don't even know why. I somehow didn't know a single thing about it. it's just one of those things you've always heard about but never gravitated towards but I'm so grateful that one idle Sunday I thought "let's go for one of the highly regarded all time greats. 50 hours though? Sure put it on and see".
I can't wait to get my copy, it'll be another LOTR and the sandman; I'll be reading this and dipping in and out for the rest of my life.
