Story
In 1886, a mysterious travelling circus becomes an international sensation. Open only at night, constructed entirely in black and white, Le Cirque des Rêves delights all who wander its circular paths and warm themselves at its bonfire. Although there are acrobats, fortune-tellers and contortionists, the Circus of Dreams is no conventional spectacle. Some tents contain clouds, some ice.

Story
A.J. Fikry, the grumpy owner of Island Books, is going through a hard time: his bookshop is failing, he has lost his beloved wife, and his prized possession - a rare first edition book has been stolen. Over time, he has given up on people, and even the books in his store, instead of offering solace, are yet another reminder of a world that is changing too rapidly. But one day A.J. finds two-year-old Maya sitting on the bookshop floor, with a note attached to her asking the owner to look after her. His life - and Maya's - is changed forever.

A lawyer's advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of Harper Lee's classic novel - a black man charged with the rape of a white girl. This semi-autobiographical classic, written by Judith Kerr, tells the story of a Jewish family escaping Germany in the days before the Second World War. Tacy Kneale, Judith’s daughter, reads this extraordinary audio edition of the unforgettable adventure Michael Morpurgo called 'The most life-enhancing book you could ever wish to read'. Suppose your country began to change. Suppose that without your noticing, it became dangerous for some people to live in it any longer and you found, to your surprise, that your own father was one of those people.

I loved this story and it ended all too soon - I really hope they record the rest of the series! I found it especially poignant in light of what's now happening in Ukraine, and so moving to hear it narrated (and so beautifully) by Tracy. I am in awe of how it manages to be so uplifting and hopeful and joyful while also being honest about the awful situation in a way that every child and adult can relate to.

I listened to this as an adult rediscovering my love of DWJ and didn't want it to end! The story spans 3 different periods in history and many different complex and bizarre strands of story following a big cast of characters but somehow DWJ manages to pull it all together and make you truly connect with the characters. The narration was good, in particular Ursula Jones was brilliant.
