Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Brown was promised her freedom on her eighteenth birthday. Poignant and powerful
Reviewed: 02-06-24
This is a beautifully written story of survival in the American slave era. Be prepared for brutal images of the treatment and degradation of black slaves. But this powerful story with strong female character has a seem of hope, courage and survival running through its core. I really found depth in the story and would highly recommend it.

I found this book beautifully narrated and easy listening. It had a rhythmic pace but no real peaks and troughs. It could have done with some peaks as all the ingredients for excitement were there but not quite delivered.

Story
Ansel Packer is scheduled to die in twelve hours. But this is not his story. Ansel doesn't want to die; he wants to be celebrated, understood. Yet now he awaits the same fate he forced on those girls, years ago. This is the story of the women who survive. As the clock ticks down, three women—a mother, a sister, a detective—reckon with the choices that culminate in tragedy, the impact on those in its wake, and the possibility of redemption.

Poignant and unexpected
Reviewed: 21-04-22
Poignant and unexpected. Don’t let the title of this book put you off. As someone who does not believe in the death penalty, I thought twice about it but, the story is predominantly about the life and back story of the death row prisoner. It was one of the most compelling novels I’ve enjoyed this year. A definite 5 stars all round.
