Story
The planet of Caliban exists much as it has for thousands of years - the knightly orders protect the common people, fighting back the beasts that lurk in the depths of the seemingly endless forests. Young Zahariel and Nemiel aspire to join the greatest of the orders, led by the example of mighty Lion El'Jonson and his vision of a peaceful and unified world. But the coming of the Imperium brings new concerns and a new destiny for the Lion as part of the Great Crusade, and the sons of Caliban must decide if they will follow him to glory among the stars.

Story
The first book of D Day Through German Eyes has fascinated listeners around the world with its insight into the German experience of June 6, 1944. Now, book 2 contains a completely different set of astonishing German testimonies from the same archive. These newly translated eyewitness statements by German veterans show the defenders to be determined but psychologically insecure, often deluded in their thinking, and all too human in their shock at the onslaught they faced.

The second book is as good as volume one and I was certainly not disappointed. An interesting collection of veterans interviewed. However, the most intriguing interview was with the artillery specialist who explained the nature and employment of the Taifun rocket system.

Story
Almost all accounts of D-Day are told from the Allied perspective, with the emphasis on how German resistance was overcome on June 6, 1944. But what was it like to be a German soldier in the bunkers and gun emplacements of the Normandy coast, facing the onslaught of the mightiest seaborne invasion in history? What motivated the German defenders, what were their thought processes - and how did they fight from one strong point to another, among the dunes and fields, on that first cataclysmic day?

Story
Following their rampage through Southeast Asia and the Pacific in the five months after Pearl Harbor, Japanese forces moved into the Solomon Islands, intending to cut off the critical American supply line to Australia. But when they began to construct an airfield on Guadalcanal in July 1942, the Americans captured the almost completed airfield for their own strategic use. The Japanese Army countered by sending to Guadalcanal a reinforced battalion under the command of Col. Kiyonao Ichiki.

A very unique book
Reviewed: 27-02-19
In many ways this is a very unique book about any action in the Pacific in WW2.It focuses on the single opening action as the Japanese attempt to regain the island of Guadalcanal. We follow the story of both the American and Japanese combatants. What is unique about this book in the amazing level of detail from the Japanese point of view and the stories of individuals. All the more surprising considering the horrendous level of casualties amongst the Japanese participants.Spoilt by a rather abrupt ending to the book.

A very different study of the war in the Pacific
Reviewed: 14-02-19
This book is not an operational narrative of the drive across the Pacific between 1942-45 but rather it is a study of operations and the lessons drawn from them. The book charts the evolution of Army and Marine doctrine and practice. An important study but probably not aimed at the casual listener.

Story
June 14, 1944, just nine days after the D-Day invasion of Normandy, another mighty fleet steamed towards its own D-Day landing. A huge U.S. flotilla of 800 ships carrying 162,000 men was about to attempt to smash into the outer defenses of the Japanese Empire. Their target was the Marianas Island group, which included Saipan, home to an important Japanese base and a large population of Japanese civilians, and Guam, the first American territory captured in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor.

An excellent account of an overlooked battle
Reviewed: 06-12-18
Very little attention is paid to the Vietnam War after the withdrawal of American ground forces. The North Vietnamese Easter offensive in 1972 is unlike any other campaign fought in that theatre until that point in time.It was fought by largely conventional forces with the North Vietnamese fielding substantial numbers of tanks. It was only American airpower with the stiff resolve of some South Vietnamese units that turned the tide. This is an account of the battle for the central highlands with particular focus on the siege of Kontum.McKenna was an American advisor embedded with South Vietnamese forces and is able to provide a detailed account of the events of the siege. An excellent addition to any library on the Vietnam War.

Story
Vietnam became the Western world’s most divisive modern conflict, precipitating a battlefield humiliation for France in 1954, then a vastly greater one for the United States in 1975. Max Hastings has spent the past three years interviewing scores of participants on both sides, as well as researching a multitude of American and Vietnamese documents and memoirs, to create an epic narrative of an epic struggle. He portrays the set pieces of Dienbienphu, the Tet offensive, the air blitz of North Vietnam and less familiar battles such as the bloodbath at Daido.

This is a brilliant book which covers the wars in their entirety with due reference to all the participants. In particular Max Hastings draws to our attention the brutalities of the communist side which is overlooked in many other histories.Ultimately the reader is left with a tremendous sympathy for the people of Vietnam for the suffering inflicted upon them.
