Fascinating Series
Reviewed: 19-09-11
I loved this series, I learnt so much about Roman History and Julius Caesar, even though the author does admit taking a little poetic licence with the some of the timelines and historic facts to make more of a story, but this didn't detract from it at all for me. Nor did Paul Blake's narrative, which yes, is different from Robert Glenister who was also excellent, but I think he does a brilliant job in interpreting the cast and giving them each their own different characterisation. A thoroughly enjoyable series. I can't wait to start Conn Iggulden's Emporer series.

Disappointing after The Count of Monte Christo
Reviewed: 09-07-11
This book will disappoint anyone who's already read The Count of Monte Christo. Dumas doesn't make the grade with The Three Musketeers. The pace is slow and overly detailed and the plot is not as intriguing as the Count. I loved the Count and was sorry to finish it but I couldn't wait to get this one over and done with. It's nothing like the movie versions.

Conn Iggulden rocks!
Reviewed: 09-07-11
This was my first taste of a Conn Iggulden novel and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes it isn't exactly based on historic fact, as explained by the author himself at the end. He has taken some poetic licence with the timelines and has crafted a fictional account of what Julius' early years might have been like. As there is no actual written account of his childhood the author based his story around what it would have been like for a typical middle class Roman boy and I think he's done a fantastic job. I thoroughly enjoyed Robert Glenister's narrative and I can't wait to listen to the next book in the series. I'm middle-aged and female so probably don't fit the typical demographic of Conn Iggulden readers but as an avid reader of historic fiction and non-fiction I would recommend this writer to anyone who enjoys the same.

Story
Secrets, mistaken identities, surprise revelations, amnesia, locked rooms and locked asylums, and an unorthodox villain made this mystery thriller an instant success when it first appeared in 1860, and it has continued to enthrall ever since. From the hero's foreboding before his arrival at Limmeridge House to the nefarious plot concerning the beautiful Laura, the breathtaking tension of Collins's narrative created a new literary genre of suspense fiction, which profoundly shaped the course of English popular writing.

Intriguing Mystery
Reviewed: 11-06-11
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. At first the pace of the narrative seemed quite slow & took a while to get used to but as the story moved on it seemed to fit right in with the Victorian characters and period. I wanted to know what was going to happen next and couldn't wait for an opportunity to listen. It's a story of the time - forbidden love, oppressed women, with sinister characters and a mystery thrown in. Highly recommended.

I couldn't wait for an excuse to plug into this one. Creepy, dark and addictive. This was my first venture into Daphne Du Maurier territory and if they're all as good as this I'll be coming back for more.

Story
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

Story
Here is the acclaimed BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of Anthony Trollope's classic story of provincial life. One of the most respected, successful chroniclers of 19th-century life, Anthony Trollope is still widely read and much-loved today, and The Barchester Chronicles - witty moral comedies with a wonderful range of characters - are among his most popular tales. Framley Parsonage tells the story of a naïve, ambitious young clergyman whose unwise associations bring him to the brink of ruin.
