Loved the story, which takes you on many twists and turns. Unusually, for this type of book, the narrator is male. He did a very creditable job, until the story moved to Scotland. Ou4 poor narrator couldn’t get to grips with a Scottish accent and so headed due south to Merseyside and channelled his inner Ringo Starb instead….for both male and female characters 🤪. It didn’t spoil the story but that’s why he only got a 4 for performance. Recommended.

Story
May Morrigan is in her bookshop one morning when she—and everyone else in the shop—receives an anonymous text. It contains a reference to a Shakespeare quotation—and seems to be aimed at the vicar and his partner, Juan. The next morning, one of them is dead. Meanwhile, May’s elderly mother Minty is staying with her, her old friend Fletcher, and her two dogs. To her dismay, Minty is quite preoccupied with death. She also keeps reminiscing about her past in ways that make May wonder what secrets she’s hiding.

This is the second in a fabulous, blackly comedic series of murder mysteries. The cast of characters is wonderfully creative... including a transvestite romance author; handsome dwarf bookseller and an elderly motorcycle riding lady assassin. It's superbly read by Jonathan Keeble. Highly recommended.

Even at 15, Jeanne, the privileged daughter of a royalist EmigrE, knew what she liked: Englishman Robert Blake, bastard son of a marquess. Yet his questionable birth rendered him forbidden. Forced to part, they were still young enough to believe in tomorrow. But as time passed, that brief ephemeral flirtation at Haddington Hall faded into memory.

I adore the books of Mary Balogh and this one is no exception. The story weaves its way through young love;misunderstandings; separation and joyous rediscovery. All set against a well researched and wonderfully drawn depiction of the Napoleonic wars. A beautiful story. Highly recommended.

Quirky, well written and brilliantly narrated

This book is a blast. A sleepy little village, missing persons, elderly detectives, transvestitism and murder...and that's just the tip of the iceberg. It's brilliantly narrated by Jonathan Keeble too, so what's not to love. Highly recommended!

A team of astronauts in the International Space Station collect meteorological data, conduct scientific experiments and test the limits of the human body. But mostly they observe. Together they watch their silent blue planet, circling it sixteen times, spinning past continents and cycling through seasons. Endless shows of spectacular beauty witnessed in a single day. Not the sort of book I’d usually go for but having read a wonderful review in The Times, I thought I’d give it a try. It’s the most unusual, unexpected, and simply wonderful bit of writing I’ve read in a long while. Although it’s set on the International Space Station it’s not a sci-fi story. I am not clever enough to do it justice in this review but it’s a story that will stay with me for a long time. It’s beautifully written, extremely well researched and thought provoking. Highly recommended.

Wonderful Story; Dreadful Narration
Reviewed: 31-10-24
Anne Gracie is an exceptionally good writer and this story is wonderful. However, it was completely ruined by the most inept and frankly bizarre narration. I was determined to finish the book because the story was so good but my goodness, it was painful. I cannot believe the publisher allowed this audiobook to be produced. If you can, get this book on kindle or in paperback…don’t subject yourself to this version.

Story
Sports Agent Myron Bolitar is in his new office on the top of a skyscraper in New York when two FBI agents ask him this very question. The man they refer to is a top basketball player and Myron's former client and old rival. Greg's DNA, they tell him, has been found at the scene of a high-profile double-murder, and he is now their main suspect. It can't be Greg, Myron tells the two agents: the reason he is Myron's 'former' client is because Greg is dead. He died three years ago of a heart attack. Myron went to his funeral and gave the eulogy.

What a delightful story! I love the detail and the craft Mary Balogh employs with her stories. She really brings the early 19th century to life, without letting it stifle the story. I loved the characters in this book, they’re definitely people I could be friends with. There is also an appearance by characters from The Bedwyn Saga. What’s not to love. Highly recommended.
