An extraordinary, inventive twist on The Scottish Play! This is Lady Macbeth 's story, with her arrival in Scotland as a young bride - there is guile, witches and monsters, told in such an engaging way that I was totally immersed in this world. And the narration was perfect.

Story
It's 1914, and talk of war feels far away to Henry Gaunt, Sidney Ellwood and the rest of their classmates, safely ensconced in their idyllic boarding school in the English countryside. At seventeen, they're too young to enlist, and anyway, Gaunt is fighting his own private battle - an all-consuming infatuation with his best friend, the dreamy, poetic Ellwood - not having a clue that Ellwood is in love with him, always has been. When Gaunt's German mother asks him to enlist as an officer in the British army to protect the family from anti-German attacks, Gaunt signs up immediately.

An incredibly powerful story of the first world war and the horror of young men dying so quickly in their thousands. The realisation as you read that so many of the officers in the trenches were so recently school boys is heartbreaking, and to then come to the in memoriam pages and learn of their deaths becomes personal as we engage with the characters. The complicated love between two young men is at the heart of this, as is their public school background. The narrator is absolutely perfect, taking us from those young school boys to broken men with exactly the right tone and pace.

The Palazzo Colombina is home to the Uccello family: three generations of men, trapped together in the dusty palace on Venice's Grand Canal. Awkward 15-year-old Nico. His distant, business-focused father. And his beloved grandfather, Paolo. Paolo is dying. But before he passes, he has secrets he's waited his whole life to share.

such a powerful story that could so easily be true, reflecting the experiences of the ordinary citizens of Venice and what Nazi occupation must have been like. The unfolding tale of the dying grandfather, who was a young man in 1940s Venice, and told via his written word to his teenage grandson, is so engrossing and atmospheric. The descriptions of Venice and the people felt so real, I could really believe I was there. There is heartache danger and tension, all delivered by an outstanding narrator. Highly recommended.

Inside her there’s a raging storm that makes her want to fight the whole world until she gets what she wants. And what she wants is for scaredy-cat Tom to get out of her life. Tom hates loud, unpredictable Zofia just as much, but he’s moving into Zofia’s house. Because his mum and Zofia’s dad are in love…and they’re having a baby. Tom and Zofia both wish the stupid baby had never happened.

Stunning!

Dual narration, told in equal turns by Tom and Zofia who are both around 11 years old. Both feel fear, but manifest in very different ways. Each are so believable and reflect the real difficult experiences of childhood that many today have. This is a touching story, and often very funny to hear the storm which is Zofia! The language is beautiful, so descriptive and perfectly crafted. On top of which, both narrators are brilliant!

Great pacy thriller!

Good twists! Whilst the number of suspects is narrow, enough doubt is sown in the reader's mind to keep guessing and the unfolding of the motives is well done. I enjoyed the flashbacks and overall plot. Narration was really engaging, once I'd realised it was set in Australia, not UK or USA!

Absolutely loved this book, and the narration was spot on and had me hooked straight away. I loved the two main characters and was there with them every step of the way on their journey. The only downside for me was a strong reminder of a couple of scenes from The Walking Dead, with people they met, but I quickly got over that as the story progressed (this is not a zombie novel). A very believable post-apocalyptic setting, at the heart of which is taking risks, true friendship and falling in love.
