I can’t remember when I was so engaged with an audiobook. The story was interesting, never predictable and had everything, moments of side splitting humour, moments of heart rending sadness mixed with joy and touching friendship. The science was interesting and believable which added to the enjoyment. I also enjoyed the narration very much, his delivery was flawless and engaging. I’m not always keen on narration with an American accent but this narrator was just spot on for this book. An all round ripping yarn with excellent delivery.

Love Rory Kinnear's narration which brings the characters to life in a really convincing way that enhances an already gripping story

Wasted credit teaches a valuable lesson

It's not often I select a book on impulse without playing the sample, this book is why I need to remind myself never to do that again. I didn't get far enough into it to know if the novel itself is good or not because I was so put off by the narration. To say that it is leaden is an understatement, the narrator's voice is perfectly pleasant but it is monotonous, no dark and light, just the same emotionless drone which is not to my taste, not even in a ghost story. Wasting a credit has taught me a valuable lesson, not to impulse buy!

it took me a while to warm to Jason but once I did I found found myself doing something I rarely do when listening to an audiobook - I laughed out loud! The interesting proposition coupled with a cast to very normal but likeable characters made this an excellent relaxing listen.

The first few chapters would have benefited from tighter editing but once it got into its stride it was as ripping a yarn as any other by this author. Excellent narration, rewards perseverance past the first few chapters.

I think this is more a teen or young adult book. It's a bit repetitive and could have done with tighter editing. There is a stock list of characters which made it seem formulaic as they were all introduced in the first few pages. This means there's no element of surprise as your cast of characters has been set out right at the start. I found it a bit slow but like the idea and the narrator made a good fist of it.

Victorian Intrigue Modern Day History

You start off wondering what exactly this book is about but when you least expect it you find yourself totally drawn in to the dual stories of the first and last Lord Nanther. In the present day the honesty of a prospective father’s doubts is told with such heartfelt concern that one wonders how the author found the words to express the narrator’s innermost feelings. This is in counterpoint to the scheming and seemingly heartless Henry Nanther and his callous treatment of anyone who might have loved him. The two threads are brought brilliantly to life by the excellent performance of Robert Powell who brings a whole world of emotion into the story without it being over the top or mawkish, this is especially shown in his delicacy of touch when dealing with the emotions around loss of much wanted pregnancies and the end of the long standing institution of hereditary peers sitting in the House of Lords. One of the best audio books I’ve listened to!

You can't beat Dorothy L Sayers but you can kill a book stone dead. I had to give up by chapter 5, I couldn't stand the awful Scottish accents that made what was said unintelligible. To make matters worse the narrator has some very strange pronunciations of common everyday words which becomes extremely irritating extremely quickly. Why does a simple Scottish "aye" become a banshee wail of "aieeee" every time? Really annoyed I wasted a credit on it!

Don't chose this book if you want a thrill and a shock on every page. This one seems innocuous, just a cataloguing of inconsequential trifles until you realise that each small insignificant incident is adding up to something profoundly shocking. And it comes at last as a reward to the faithful
