Slightly different from the usual books as it concentrates on covert intelligence work and hostage rescue. One of my favourite books and I will listen to it again at some point.

Story
The Legion is the action-packed tenth novel in Simon Scarrow's best-selling Eagles of the Empire series. Perfect for fans of Bernard Cornwell and Conn Iggulden. Egypt, AD 49. Cato, one of the youngest Prefects of the Roman army, and Centurion Macro have a tough posting: to track down and destroy a gang of former gladiators who have turned to piracy. Driven by vengeance, these hardened brutes have been defiling temples, sinking Roman ships, and slaughtering men, women and children.

Another enjoyable Eagles of the Empire. Cracking plot twists and as always made better by Jonathan Keeble. The next book has a different narrator and I’m doubt it will be as good. Keeble brings the story to life and makes the character likeable. The plot is great and despite this is being the 10th in the series, the books never get boring!

The 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis was the most perilous event in history, when mankind faced a looming nuclear collision between the United States and Soviet Union. During those weeks, the world gazed into the abyss of potential annihilation. Max Hastings’s graphic new history tells the story from the viewpoints of national leaders, Russian officers, Cuban peasants, American pilots and British disarmers.

Well researched and set out clearly. I enjoyed this one. The usual level of Max Hastings analysis and well read by the narrator. Eye opening and thought provoking, I had heard of the Cuban Missile Crisis but knew nothing more than that. Now I know the full story, which is helped by Max Hasting’s explanation of the events leading up to. It explains it from all sides and levels of the hierarchy and political class. Worth a listen.

Different in a good way
Reviewed: 03-01-25
Different from the previous books in that there’s less action but more espionage content. As always incredibly detailed and Ray Porter brings the detail to life while keeping you engaged. The book, again as always, is thought provoking. It makes you wonder the dangers of AI, the near peer environment and the consequences of China’s claim to Taiwan and how that could play out.

Story
The Gladiator is the compelling ninth novel in Simon Scarrow's best-selling Eagles of the Empire series. A must read for fans of Bernard Cornwell. While centurions Macro and Cato are returning to Rome from a harrowing campaign against the Parthians, their transport ship is almost capsized by a tidal wave. They barely make it to the port of Matala in Crete where they are stunned to find a devastated town. An earthquake has struck the island, destroying its cities and killing thousands.

On 25 June, 1950, the invasion of South Korea by the Communist North launched one of the bloodiest conflicts of the last century. The seemingly limitless power of the Chinese-backed North was thrown against the ferocious firepower of the UN-backed South in a war that can be seen today as the stark prelude to Vietnam.

Usual cracking narration, yes many of the place names are pronounced wrong but it’s brings a slight humour to the story.
Story wise, I couldn’t put the pieces together until long into the story. This is because of the fantastic writing by the author. The book is clearly well researched both in locations and culture.
Can’t wait for the next one! The only error I found was at one scene where Soya is described as being the driver of a van and being sat in the drivers seat on the left hand side of the vehicle.
