Story
The peace of a Midlands village is upset when local businessman Harry Bowers doesn’t return from choir practice. More concerned than the man’s own wife, it would seem, investigating officer Detective Sergeant Sunita Roy becomes convinced he has been done away with. But there is no trace of the man, just a litany of evidence of an ailing marriage and a nose-diving business venture. In charge of her first serious case, DS Roy will struggle to win the respect of her colleagues—in particular her Brummie boss, DCI Gavin Roscoe.

Narrator was odd

The pacing of this was weird. There would be large gaps in the middle of sentences which completely distracts from the story.
The story itself was a bit bland. I didn’t find myself hugely engrossed.

Unpacking her belongings in her new hometown of Portland, Oregon, herbalist and reformed alchemist Zoe Faust can't help but notice she's picked up a stowaway. Did you know she’s vegan?
Reviewed: 12-12-24
Hey, did you know Zoe Faust, the 300+ year old alchemist who “accidentally” (even though she was looking for it) found the elixir of life, can only function when the sun is up, just like the plants she tends?
Did you know she doesn’t drink coffee, only tea? Or weird vegan smoothies that she makes at really inopportune times (like when there are 3 kids missing with a murderer on the loose).
Did you know that the weird 3ft gargoyle that stowed in her packing crates is a really good cook and cooks SO MUCH FOOD that it has to be mentioned every couple of minutes? Or that all of the food is vegan?
If you didn’t know any of those things, you’ve clearly zoned out from boredom.
The vegan propaganda in this is mind boggling and I don’t get how it was pushed through an editor and then publisher. This could have been such a good book, but the author was so focused on making sure everyone knew the main character was vegan and all the food was vegan and all the drinks were vegan and that she became vegan because she “wanted to take better care of herself”, that I think she forgot what she was actually supposed to be writing about.

Story
On the first day of her new job, Harris is called to the scene of a brutal murder at the heart of Surrey society. A shocking crime, with a meticulous killer: the victim’s eyes have been removed and the body drained of blood, with no forensic evidence left at the scene. Her boss insists it must be the return of a killer who escaped justice several years ago, leaving a trail of bloody ritualistic killings. Harris isn’t so sure: both sets of victims have had their eyes removed, but other details are significantly different.

Story was all over the place
Reviewed: 09-12-24
I have absolutely no idea what was going on in this book. I’ve still no idea who the bad guy was, or why he actually did what he did. I know there was a painting, and some drugs, and some contact lenses. That’s about as much as I could tell you. Which, after 14 hours, is pretty shocking.
Lou Brealey is not a natural narrator. Her voice is too monotonous and it just drags on.
Can say I’ll be giving the second book a miss.

To make things worse, Liz is the ex-girlfriend of DCI Craig Gillard who is drawn into the investigation. Is it just a missing person or something worse? Saw it coming
Reviewed: 07-12-24
The story had lots of twists and turns, but I saw the outcome coming a mile away. I’m not sure what gave it away, but to me it was pretty obvious.
The second story within the story was pretty lame. Not much really went on. At points it seemed like it was going to tie in majorly with the main storyline but then just didn’t.
At points it was difficult to determine what was going on. Whether it was the narrators way of speaking or the editing, I don’t know, but paragraphs and chapters seemed to just run into one another. It was also difficult to sometimes differentiate between characters at times.
Overall it was pretty good and kept me interested for a few hours

I enjoyed what I thought was going to be the finale of Cody’s investigation into the Clowns. Apparently a 5th book has been published so I’m hoping we get that on audible soon with Keeble as the narrator as he really brings it to life.
I thought it was interesting the way the main murder and Cody’s own investigation came together, and that despite everything he has been through the man kept his morals.
I’m hoping we get to see more of his relationship with Grace, I think she’s really sweet and I think her and Cody could be good for one another.

He is posted to Stoke Newington police station in London’s tough East End. Despite barely concealed contempt for her hapless new charge, his experienced instructor, WPC Dawn Matthews, puppy walks him through a journey, which is regularly amusing, frequently sad and occasionally bizarre. You will not listen to a more accurate account of how London was policed a generation ago.

I couldn’t stop listening.
The tales of a young MET police officer who is trying to find his way in life, and the job, was unexpectedly funny, sad, and downright tragic.
Chris’ ability to put his foot in his mouth without even realising made me physically facepalm multiple times, while his utter incomprehension of certain things made me laugh out loud.
The narrator did a fantastic job with all the accents and the way he carried the last scene was utterly heartbreaking.
I’m gutted audible don’t have the others so I can see what happens next in Chris’ life.

Surrounded by hills and lakes, Still Waters is home to a close-knit community of wealthy retirees. It's an unlikely setting for violence. The police don't take Callum's disappearance seriously: he's 24-years-old, after all. But Callum's mother, a Still Waters resident, knows that something is very wrong. Then a body is discovered floating in the lake. Head bashed in. But it's not Callum. And someone tweets: Come out to play one last time, Alice.

This book drove me absolutely crazy. The women were gossipy, rude, and utterly stupid. The main husband was just a useless slob who didn’t seem to give a damn even though his kid had gone missing.
Why the hell would you burn down the place you THINK your son was murdered in, jeopardising the position of the police finding his killer?!? Utterly ridiculous.
I tried my best but had to stop listening at 3 .5 hours in.

Good story, narrator could be better
Reviewed: 13-11-24
I enjoyed the story and getting the background of some of the characters, but I found the narrator a bit ‘sleepy’ in places.
There wasn’t a huge amount of difference between emotions, and she made the dialogue sound dull.
There were also times where the editing was a bit off and it felt like the chapters seemed to run into one another.
Overall, I enjoyed the story but it took longer to get through than I’d have liked because I had to keep stopping to wake myself up.
