Story
Learn all about the Savage Stone Age, with all the nasty bits left in. You probably thought that Stone Age people spent all their time standing stones up on one end and rubbing sticks together to make fires.

The year is 937. England is a nation divided, ruled by minor kings and Viking lords. Each vies for land and power. The Wessex king Æthelstan, grandson of Alfred the Great, is readying himself to throw a spear into the north. Story
History happens all around you. And, occasionally, to you. I could have been a bomb-disposal expert, or a volunteer for the Mars mission, or a firefighter, something safe and sensible. But, no, I had to be an historian. It began well. A successful assignment to 17th century Cambridge to meet Isaac Newton, and another to witness the historic events at The Gates of Grief. So far so good.

I can't stop listening

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Hell yes! I recommend this book and the whole series to everyone. The writing is brilliant, funny, emotive and literate and the history (in so far as I can tell) beautifully researched and carefully analysed. The characters are wonderfully drawn and so vivid. I keep wondering what will happen next.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I guess everyone will say Max, and of course she is a wonderful heroine but I really love Markham. Such a dude! He is seemingly indestructible and completely endearing.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
The butter...
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It's made me laugh out loud several times and yes, get teared up a few times too.
Any additional comments?
All the books are fantastic!! I can't recommend highly enough. If you're a fan of Terry Pratchett then you'll love Street Mary's. It's in no way a copy but has the same joie de vivre, beautiful style and imaginative treatment of the everyday. I wish you the same joy that Jodi Taylor has brought me.
